We have a National League matchup to consider for Tuesday evening when the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates meet under partly cloudy skies and temps in the upper 60’s for game one of a three-game series. Colorado is last in the National League West and plans on right-hander German Marquez to take the hill on Tuesday night for the Rockies. Pittsburgh is third in the National League Central and will look to righty Chris Archer to take the mound for the Pirates. I’m the Flash and I will be discussing this contest with you today.
Rockies Four Game Losing Streak
The Rockies have lost four consecutive games including getting swept by Philadelphia this past weekend in Philly. Colorado has also lost six of their last ten games and has a record away from Coors Field of 11 wins and 14 losses. Colorado has been relatively healthy this season and getting outscored by nine runs this season means the Rockies might still have a chance to turn this season around. That could happen as soon as this series with the Pirates.
🚨🚨SECOND HOMER OF THE DAY🚨🚨
— Colorado Rockies (@Rockies) May 19, 2019
Colorado isn’t reporting any significant injuries for their series with the Pirates nor do they have anyone coming off the IL any time soon.
Marquez (4-2, 3.80 ERA) has had a good season thus far and his 3.80 ERA is impressive when considering he pitches in Coors field but his 3.14 xFIP suggests that Marquez might be the victim of some bad luck and may also see some positive regression coming his way at some point this season. Marquez strikes out 9.14, walks 1.69 and allows 1.13 bombs per nine innings pitched and boasts a 1.19 WHIP this season.
The Pirates? They rank 20th in baseball with a 21 percent strikeout rate and maybe Marquez takes a hit on his strikeout total. The Pirates have a .313 OBP and .151 ISO against righties this season could be problematic for Marquez on Tuesday night.
Pirates Three Game Winning Streak
Pittsburgh is starting to heat up and took three of four from the Padres in San Diego this past weekend. That gives Pittsburgh seven wins in their last ten games making their eleven-game road trip a successful one. Pittsburgh is 9-9 at PNC Park this season and opponents have outscored Pittsburgh by 39 runs this season. Pittsburgh has a good chance at extending their three-game winning streak and that begins Tuesday against the Rockies.

The Pirates have been hit by the injury bug this season and has a LONG IL but haven’t added any new names to the list and won’t have anyone coming off it for their series with the Rockies.
Archer (1-3, 5.58 ERA) is having his struggles and enters Tuesday night having lost three consecutive starts. Archer has a 5.58 ERA but his 4.79 xFIP suggests maybe Archer is the victim of some bad luck this season. Archer strikes out 9.98 per nine innings with 4.70 walks and 1.76 bombs per nine innings pitched this season.
The Rockies might have some problems against Archer with their 24 percent strikeout rate, but Archer has a control issue and I’m not sure their .306 OBP can take advantage of the 4.4 free passes Archer issues but Colorado does boast a .181 ISO against righties and could pose a problem for Archer and his nearly two bombs allowed per nine innings pitched this season.
- Pirates are 5-0 in their last 5 when their opponent scores 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- Pirates are 6-1 in their last 7 Tuesday games.
- Pirates are 5-1 in their last 6 games following an off day.
- Pirates are 5-1 in their last 6 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- Rockies are 0-4 in their last 4 road games.
- Rockies are 0-4 in their last 4 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
- Rockies are 0-4 in their last 4 vs. a team with a winning record.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I’m hoping the line will be less than -150 because I like the Pirates at home against the Rockies on Tuesday night. Not sure what to think about Archer but he has a high strikeout rate and up against a Colorado club with a high strikeout rate, so he should get a few free outs along the way. Marquez is solid but the Pirates are a hot-hitting team and I think the offense can make up for any Archer miscues and should give the Pirates bullpen enough of a lead that their eight blown saves this season can’t mess up. Cash with the Flash and play the Pirates on Tuesday.
Full-Game Total Pick
The total hasn’t been posted yet but I don’t see that many runs scored on Tuesday. Marquez has been strong on the road with a 3.06 xFIP and Archer is better at home. Not much better, but better and that should keep this total under eight runs on Tuesday night. I saw the following trends I think could be helpful on Tuesday night;
- Under is 3-0-1 in Marquez’s last 4 starts vs. Pirates.
- Under is 13-4-4 in the last 21 meetings in Pittsburgh.
Cash with the Flash and play the under on Tuesday night.
