We have a National League matchup as our focus for Wednesday when the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates meet under partly cloudy skies and temps in the mid-seventies for game two of their three-game series. This preview is written prior to the completion of game one and all opinions are based on stats from the conclusion of Monday’s contests.
Colorado is fourth in the NL West and plans on righty Jon Gray to start against the Pirates. Pittsburgh is undecided about who they plan on starting and will likely look to an “opener” followed by the bullpen against the Rockies on Wednesday. I’m the Flash and will be discussing this game with you today.
Rockies Four Game Losing Streak
Colorado is off to a slow start and is 9.5 games behind first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West standings. The main culprit seems to be the Rockies last in the National League pitching staff and its National League-worst 5.00 ERA this season. The Rockies staff also boasts a 4.27 xFIP suggesting maybe some bad luck is involved this season. The Rockies have lost six of their last ten games and enters Tuesday’s game hoping to end a four-game losing streak.
🚨🚨SECOND HOMER OF THE DAY🚨🚨

The Rockies aren’t reporting any injuries for their series with the Pirates.
Gray (3-4, 4.73 ERA) has allowed five earned runs on four separate occasions this season with three of those crooked numbers coming on the road. Gray has an ERA of 4.73 but his 3.67 xFIP suggests Gray has been the victim of some bad luck and could see some positive regression at some point this season.
Gray might get away with allowing 3.71 walks per nine and 1.69 bombs allowed per nine innings pitched against a Pirates team ranking 19th in MLB against right-handed pitching with a .320 OBP and .159 ISO. Gray strikes out 9.96 per nine innings and that might take a hit against the Pirates and its 19 percent strikeout rate.
Pirates Three Game Winning Streak
Pittsburgh is only 2.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs for the top spot in the National League Central and has won seven of its last ten games. The bullpen blowing eight of their 23 save opportunities is partly responsible as is their inability to generate more than the 3.84 runs scored per game. The Pirates has been outscored by 39 runs this season and enter play on Tuesday hoping to end a three-game losing streak.

The Pirates have plenty of injuries for this series but aren’t listing any new injuries for the last ten days and don’t have anyone coming off the IL for this series.
It looks like Pittsburgh will look to the bullpen to handle the pitching on Wednesday and this bullpen has a team ERA of 4.65 but their 4.14 xFIP suggests maybe the fellas behind the outfield wall has been a bit unlucky this season.
Colorado has a 27 percent strikeout rate on the road and that should benefit a Pirates bullpen that strikes out 10.69 hitters per nine innings pitched. Pittsburgh relievers allow 4.08 walks per nine innings pitched and allows 1.32 bombs per nine innings and that could be trouble as the Rockies boast a .177 ISO on the road this season.
- Pirates are 3-7 in their last 10 home games.
- Pirates are 4-11 in their last 15 vs. National League West.
- Rockies are 0-4 in their last 4 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
- Rockies are 0-4 in their last 4 vs. a team with a winning record.
- Rockies are 0-4 in their last 4 overall.
- Rockies are 0-4 in their last 4 games on grass.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Rockies should have a good price and I like them much better than I do Pittsburgh. Gray is such a good pitcher and has beaten the Brewers and the Braves on the road this season. I don’t trust the Pittsburgh bullpen at all and I suspect the Rockies are going to score some runs on Wednesday evening. I also suspect Gray will have a big game against the Pirates. Cash with the Flash and play the Rockies on Wednesday evening.
Full-Game Total Pick
Neither side is known for their offensive production and I trust Gray and I honestly don’t trust the Rockies offense very much on the road. I saw the following trend I think might be helpful on Wednesday afternoon;
- Under is 10-1 in Grays last 11 starts following a team loss in their previous game.
Cash with the Flash and play the under on Wednesday!!
