New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles
Where and when: Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland, Wednesday, 7:05 pm EST
Game three of a four-game set between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles will continue at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland, on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm EST. Monday game. The Yankees have now won straight games versus the Orioles along with six of the last eight in 2019. New York swept Baltimore in a three-game set last month at Camden Yards and added to their success after a come from behind win in game one on Monday night.
Despite the surprising Tampa Bay Rays being hot on their heels for the division lead along with the surging Boston Red Sox currently occupying third-place, the Yankees enter this set winners of eight of their last eleven games, which included a three-game series win over the Rays, most recently, at Yankee Stadium. In fact, their game two loss to the Rays happened to be their only loss during a five-game homestand, as their offense exploded for thirteen runs in the finale. With the team slated to welcome back some pivotal players to the lineup after injury, expect the Yankees to become even more of a dangerous team at the plate as the season wears on.
One of the major cornerstones for their success on the hill in JA Happ was atrocious in the opener, however, in pitching only three innings in game one while giving up six earned runs in addition to two homers. In all, Happ (3-3) dropped his third game of the season after winning two straight contests, including a victory over the Orioles on May 10th.
After a 6-1 Baltimore lead to begin the sixth inning, Gleyber Torres continued his hit streak in launching a two-run blast to spark the late rally for New York, his tenth on the season. Torres has recorded at least a hit in each of his last six games while increasing his batting average to .293. However, Gary Sanchez sealed the deal with his thirteenth homer on the year with a grand-slam in the eighth to give the Yankees the lead as well as the victory.
The Baltimore Orioles, on the other hand, received great performances from Trey Mancini (.304) along with Hanser Alberto in game one, as they each had two RBI”s. However, for a pitching staff that ranks next to last in the MLB in ERA, it was only a matter of time before the offensive-minded Yankees were able to break through at the plate. And while Andrew Cashner recorded a quality start for Baltimore in pitching six innings while allowing a homer along with three earned runs, reliever Mychal Givens imploded on the hill in giving up five earned runs in only 1 ⅓ innings late in the contest.
The loss was Baltimore’s eighth in their last ten games, overall. Their offense continues to labor in averaging just 3.83 runs per game while the team is coming off a disappointing, four-game series loss on the road to the Cleveland Indians to where the offense was only able to plate one run in the final two games. Again, they have been dominated by the Yankees in every way recently while dropping seventeen of their last twenty-three games at Camden Yards.
Orioles pitching dominated by Yankees in recent matchups
No pitchers have been assigned for this matchup, however, the pitching staff for each have been trending in opposite directions for quite some time. The Orioles, as stated, own one of the worst ERA’s in baseball. And while Cashner is one of the leaders of this unit with four wins on the year, he possesses a 4.14 ERA in addition to having a strikeout to walk ratio of almost 2 to one. John Means (5-4) has been a solid addition to the staff as he possesses one of the lowest ERA’s for the Orioles after pitching 43 innings on the year. However, he fell to the Cleveland Indians in his last start just three days ago while allowing three earned runs, including a two-run homer to Jordan Luplow.

In all, the Orioles rank near the bottom in quality starts on the year (10, 29th) along with errors (34, 25th). Furthermore, they have allowed thirty-nine runs their last five contests. Ten has certainly been the lucky number for their last two opponents as the team has allowed ten runs in each of their last two games, overall.
Yankees likely to go to bullpen for game three
The pitching for the Yankees, on the other hand, have really been stout all season long as Domingo German (8-1) not only lead the staff in wins, but, also has the lowest ERA amongst pitchers pitching fifty innings or more. He has pounded the strike zone this season with fifty-nine on the year in addition to winning his last five starts for the Yankees. C.C. Sabathia (2-1) has not been as effective as once was, but has put in some strong innings New York in 2019 in pitching a total of 36 innings in with a decent ERA of 2.97. However, the left-hander has gone past the sixth inning in just one of his starts this season. Furthermore, his strikeout count has severely decreased while his tendency to walk batters continues to rise, allowing eleven in his last four appearances.

Masahiro Tanaka along with James Paxton each have three wins on the season for New York; However, Tanaka continues to be questionable due to a shine injury while Paxton remains questionable as well with knee problems. The team is not expected to welcome Luis Severino back to the lineup until mid-July, as the right-hander continues to heal from a shoulder injury.
