The Kansas City Royals are looking to take a step in the right direction at home against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

Tigers hoping to get back on track

It has been a tough start to the season for the Tigers struggled to find any consistency currently holding a record well under the .500 mark on the year. Detroit is sitting at 14 games under the .500 mark that has put them well out of the top spot in the AL Central being 18 games behind the Minnesota Twins for the division lead. This has seen them struggle to put

forth a strong foot forward with their lackluster production from the plate and on the mound. Detroit is currently ranked 29th in the majors in runs scored, 27th in hits, 29th in home runs, and 25th in batting average. Although they have struggled with strong power production, former All-Star first baseman Miguel Cabrera has been their primary contributor offensive as he’s averaging .296 with three home runs and a team-best 27 RBI. In the last seven days, Cabrera is batting .421 along with a home run and five RBI.

The offensive production certainly hasn’t been there to lift the team to the next level, but they have been able to get by as of late. This has seen Cabrera putting up consistent numbers in the process. The Tigers haven’t had the most effective pitching from their staff this season. Detroit will turn to left-hander Daniel Norris, who holds a 2-5 record with a 4.60 ERA in 14 games played with 10 starts. Norris has struggled a bit in his last few starts dropping three consecutive outings that have seen him go less than six innings in each of those outings. However, he has given up three or fewer runs twice over that span. This is a chance for him to turn things around against the Royals, who have struggled to produce offensively this season. It’s in Norris’ hands to take advantage of this matchup facing one of the worst teams in the league.

Royals continuing to stumble

It has been nothing short of a disappointing start to the season for the Royals that has seen them fall to one of the worst marks in the league. They have had their fair share of issues both on the mound and at the plate this year that has pushed them well out of the playoff picture both in the AL Central along with the wildcard race as well. In fact, Kansas City is currently sitting in the final spot in the division sitting 23.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins. This downward trend has continued to go in that direction having lost eight out of their last 10 games including their past two contests. They have been one of the least effective pitching staffs in the league with their pitching staff ranking 28th with a 5.22 ERA, 28th with opponents hitting .269 against them. This has been a huge part of their slow start to the year that has already crushed their hopes to make a serious push toward the playoffs.

The Royals are going to turn to left-hander Danny Duffy to right the ship as he currently holds a 3-3 record with a 4.68 ERA, and .268 opposing batting average through his first eight starts of the year. Duffy has struggled in his last two starts registering back-to-back losses that include him giving up 10 runs over 7.2 innings pitched. He is coming off his shortest outing of the year where he went just 2.1 innings giving up four runs on four hits in a loss to the Boston Red Sox. In his last five starts, Duffy holds a 2-2 record with a 5.84 ERA, a .270 opposing batting average over that span. His lack of consistency on the mound, especially as of late that could very well flare up again against the Tigers despite their lack of offensive production. If the Royals hope to get back on track at home on Wednesday night, it will need Duffy to put together a strong outing where he’s able to go more than five innings.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet

The Royals have continued to tread water as the season has worn on. Meanwhile, the Tigers should be able to take advantage of the matchup against Junis. Keep in mind, Detroit is also 5-1 in the last six meetings against Kansas City.

Prediction: Detroit +134

Full-Game Total Pick

This is a matchup between two of the least productive teams in the league. In turn, it will be a contest more dictated by the pitching on the mound. It should be noted that the under is 5-1 in Turnbull’s last six road starts.

Prediction: Under 9
