San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants

Where: Oracle Park, San Francisco California

When: Wednesday, June 12, 2019, 9:45 pm Eastern

We have a National League West Division matchup to consider for Wednesday night when the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants meet under partly cloudy skies and temps in the low seventies for game two of their two games scheduled series. This preview was published prior to the conclusion of Tuesday night MLB contests and all opinions are based on the completed play from Monday night MLB action.

San Diego is fourth in the West and plans for lefty Joey Lucchesi to get the start against the Giants. San Francisco is last in the West and will likely start righty Shaun Anderson to pitch against the Padres. I’m the Flash and will be discussing this game with you today.

Padres Rough 4-6 Home Stand

The Padres are falling fast and had a rough ten-game homestand, going 4-6 against the likes of the Marlins, Phillies, and Nationals. This season San Diego has been outscored by 31 runs and now hit the road where they have a winning record of 15-13 and scores an average of 4.46 runs per game on the road. Outfielder Franmil Reyes leads San Diego with 19 bombs and infielder Eric Hosmer leads the club with 36 RBI and a team-high .328 OBP and .281 batting average.

San Diego has plenty listed on their injury report but hasn’t added any new or significant injuries in the last month or so.

Lucchesi (5-3, 4.21 ERA) has a solid, 1.17 WHIP and his 3.83 xFIP suggests maybe Lucchesi has been unlucky this season and could see some positive regression at some point this season. Lucchesi strikes out 9.09 per nine innings pitched and allows 2.44 walks and 1.22 bombs per nine innings pitched.

Lucchesi has a 50 percent groundball rate and allows a 33 percent hard contact rate and that should work well as the Giants has hit just 19 bombs over 1034 at-bats at Oracle Park this season. The Giants don’t strike out or draw many walks so Lucchesi is going to have to rely on his fastball and changeup to get the job done Wednesday night.

Giants Dead Last in NL West

San Francisco is last in the West and in rebuilding mode, so not a lot was expected from them this season. They’ve played .500 ball over their last ten games and is 11-20 at Oracle Park this season. San Francisco has been outscored by 86 runs and scores an average of 2.90 runs per game at home this season. Infielder Brandon Belt leads San Francisco in nearly every offensive category including home runs (9), RBI (27) and has a .249 batting average and .368 OBP this season.

The Giants has listed Belt as day to day for Tuesday with an illness and catcher Buster Posey is on the IL with a hamstring injury and won’t play this series. Posey has a .321 OBP with three bombs and 18 RBI over 152 at-bats and is the emotional leader of the Giants.

Anderson (1-1, 4.18 ERA) has a 1.36 WHIP and his 4.37 xFIP suggests maybe Anderson has been a bit lucky this season. Anderson strikes out 5.14 per nine innings pitched while allowing 2.57 walks and 1.29 home runs per nine innings pitched.

Anderson sports a groundball rate of 47 percent and allows a 39.6 percent hard contact rate and that might be a problem against the Padres and .180 ISO, .285 BABIP and wRC+ of 90 and their 4.5 runs scored per game away from Petco Park. The Padres have a high strikeout rate and a low walk rate that could boost Anderson’s strikeout totals Wednesday night.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

I am not sure what the money line will look like but if it’s under -150 I would suggest playing the Padres to beat the Giants. San Diego has too good of offensive players to score barely four road runs per game and at some point, they are going to bust loose and that could happen against Anderson. Lucchesi has been a bright spot and I look for that to continue Wednesday night.

Cash with the Flash and play the Padres to beat the Giants.

Prediction: Padres

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Neither team scores many runs and I don’t expect many in a pitchers park like Oracle Park. Lucchesi can be stingy and Anderson has been unlucky and if this game ends with a 4-1 Padres win, then I have done my job well. I saw the following trend that might be helpful for Wednesday night.

  • Under is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.

Cash with the Flash and play UNDER on Wednesday night.

Prediction: Under
