Toronto Blue Jays vs. Baltimore Orioles

Where and when:  Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland, Wednesday, 7:05 pm EST

Game two of a three-game, AL East series versus the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles will take place on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm EST at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland.  And despite suffering the 5-3 loss in their finale earlier in the season, the Orioles fared well versus the Blue Jays in picking up the series win.

However, Baltimore also enters this contest losers of twelve straight series.  The Houston Astros were the most recent team to knock off Baltimore as they won the finale with a series-ending 4-0 shutout at Minute Maid Park thanks to a two-run homer by Yordan Alverez.  In all, the loss was the seventh in ten games for the Orioles as they continue to reside in the cellar.  On the other hand, they are roughly three-games behind the fourth-place Toronto Blue Jays. With that being the case, some much-needed wins will certainly be needed in order for the home team to erect themselves from the cellar.

Toronto has also struggled lately in dropping four straight games, overall.  And while their offense has been dismal in plating just six runs during this time, their pitching rotation/bullpen have given up a total of twenty-eight.  They were most recently swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-game set at home as they were not able to follow up a momentum-building series win at Rogers Centre versus the New York Yankees in yet another three-game set.

Freddy Galvis leads the team in batting at .240 in 2019; However, has two hits alongside six strikeouts in his last four games.  Randal Grichuk . had an outstanding series versus the Yankees after recording a total of five hits, three homers, along with four RBI’s.  However, Grichuk has gone hitless in his last two contest.

Hess seeks more consistency versus Blue Jays

With the way things have gone this year for David Hess (1-8), it is no surprise that the right-hander has gone winless in each of his starts at Camden Yards this season.  Of course, the reason for the losses was his own as he gave up a whopping twenty-seven runs in five starts this year.  Furthermore, during these outings, Hess has allowed an average of two homers per matchup to his opponents.

However, despite how horrible Hess has been, he has a knack for dominating the lineup for the Toronto Blue Jays.  In other words, he picked up a win versus the Blue Jays earlier in the season in going 6 ⅓ innings while recording eight strikeouts in a hitless outing.  On the other hand, the bullpen for Baltimore, which ranks near the bottom of the MLB, nearly imploded in this contest to the point to where the Orioles almost suffered the loss in a hard-fought, 6-5 victory.  Hess also pitched well in yet another meeting versus Toronto on August 27th, 2018, in allowing just four hits in six innings while recording six strikeouts in a 7-0 victory.

Aside from Randal Grichuk, who is hitting .300 on ten at bats versus Hess, the remainder of the lineup has struggled mightily.  Justin Smoak is hitless in eleven at bats while Teoscar Hernandez along with Freddy Galvis are a combined zero for eight, lifetime versus the right-hander.

Jackson continues to look for first win of the year

Edwin Jackson (0-4) has been just as awful in 2019 while coming off an outing to where was pulled after just 3 ⅓ innings after allowing two homers along with two earned.  The loss was his fourth straight as Jackson, as illustrated by his 11.90 ERA, has not been able to keep teams off the bases throughout the season.

Since being bought over from the Oakland Athletics, the right-hander pulled his first (and best) start on the road versus the San Francisco Giants in allowing two earned along with a homer in five frames in a 4-3 loss.  Since, he has allowed twenty-four earned runs along with eight homers, including giving up ten earned runs in a 13-6 loss to the Rockies in only 2 ⅓ innings.

And while Jackson has not faced Baltimore in quite some time, he has been stellar in recent matchups versus Jonathan Villar (1-7) along with Chris Davis (0-17).

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet

While each of these pitchers has been terrible this season, I will back the Blue Jays in this matchup as they have dominated in the past twenty contests.  Also, one should look for the offense for Toronto, which ranks as one of the worst in the league, to buck up a bit with Hess on the mound as he has been most generous at home, as pointed out.

Prediction: Pick:  Toronto Blue Jays -105

Full-Game Total Pick

Look for the over to be the strong play for this contest as both Jackson and Hess have gone off the deep end, as it relates to consistency on the mound.  With that being said, despite both team’s tendency to struggle with consistency as well, one should expect a high-scoring matchup on Wednesday as both pitchers will allow for numerous opportunities to score.

Prediction: Pick: Over 10.5

Full-Game Prop Bet

While I believe that this will be a back and forth affair, one should look for the Blue Jays to pull away at some point while tagging Hess at the plate, consistently.  In all, Toronto will capitalize off less than stellar pitching throughout the contest as they will cover the run line on Wednesday versus the last-place Orioles.

Prediction: Pick: Toronto Blue Jays -1.5

First Five Innings Side Pick

Again, Toronto will have their way with Hess, who continues to struggle mightily on the year.  And while Jackson has struggled as well on the year, look for the Blue Jays to have many more scoring opportunities early on as they will take a lead into the sixth inning.

Prediction: Pick: Toronto Blue Jays -0.5

First Five Innings Total Bet

I have little to no confidence versus either of these pitchers as they have proven that they are no strangers to giving up entirely too many runs.  With that being the case, I look for the over to be the play after five as each team will have opportunities to push some runs across the plate.  And while the Blue Jays will have a lead at the halfway mark, the over is indeed the strong play.

Prediction: Pick: Over 6

First Five Innings Prop Prediction

Look for Toronto to atone for a 4-2 loss in their opener versus the Orioles by picking up a high-scoring victory on Wednesday night.  Again, Hess happens to be much worse than Jackson these days, as a struggling Toronto lineup will be licking their chops to come out of their present funk on the mound.

Prediction: Pick: Toronto Blue Jays -110
