MLB: Wednesday, June 13, Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona, 3:40 PM ET.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will be trying to hold on to their slim lead in the NL West when they face the Pittsburgh Pirates in the final game of their three-game series on Wednesday afternoon.
Jameson Taillon, who is 3-5 with a 4.08 ERA, will get the start for the Pirates. The Diamondbacks will turn to Zack Greinke, who is 5-4 with a 3.53 ERA.
Pirates Trying To End Seven Series Losing Streak
The Pirates have fallen on hard times over the past month, and they haven’t won a series since they swept the Chicago White Sox on May 16. They will be trying to snap their seven series losing streak and get back in contention in the NL Central by defeating the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
One of the biggest reasons the Pirates have been struggling is their offense, which has been very inconsistent lately.
The Pirates have a .252 batting average, which is ninth in the league. Their .322 on base percentage is also ninth, while their 297 runs scored is 10th in the league. The Pirates will need to play better offensively if they want to get past Greinke and the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Pittsburgh’s pitching hasn’t been as good as its offense this season, and their pitchers will have to start playing better if they want to end their current skid. Opponents are batting .251 against the Pirates, which is 19th in the league. Their 4.20 ERA is also 19th, while their 1.31 WHIP is 13th in the league.
In his last start, Taillon gave up eight hits and three runs in five innings. He will need a better performance to give the Pirates a chance in this one.
Diamondbacks Trying To Create Distance In NL West
The Diamondbacks were able to regain the NL West lead, thanks to the Colorado Rockies struggling over the past few weeks. Now, they are trying to create more distance between themselves and the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers, who have overcome their slow start to the season and are playing very well right now.
Offensively, the Diamondbacks are one of the worst teams in the league. They have a .223 batting average, which is the worst in the league. Their .301 on base percentage is 28th in the league, while their 269 runs scored is 21st.
Arizona’s pitching has been much better than their offense, and has helped the team rise to the top of the division.
Opponents are batting .233 against the Diamondbacks, which is eighth in the league. Their 3.43 ERA is the fourth best in the league, while their 1.20 WHIP is also fourth.
In his last start, Greinke gave up eight hits and four earned runs in 5.2 innings, but the Diamondbacks were able to defeat the Rockies 9-4. They will need a better performance from him if they want to get the win on Wednesday.
- 1-4 in their last 5 road games.
- 1-4 in their last 5 vs. a team with a winning record.
- 1-5 in their last 6 vs. National League West.
- 4-1 in their last 5 overall.
- 5-1 in their last 6 home games.
The Pirates have struggled on the road, especially when playing NL West opponents. The Diamondbacks have been very good in their last five games, especially at home.
