We have an American League East matchup to discuss for Tuesday evening when the Tampa Bay Rays face the New York Yankees in game two of a three-game series under cloudy skies and temps in the mid-sixties. This write-up was published prior to the conclusion of Monday MLB contests and all opinions are based from Sunday’s completed MLB play.
Rays Half Game Behind Yankees
Tampa Bay enters this series on Monday with a 23-10 road record and has outscored their opponents by 97 runs this season. The Rays are a half game behind the Yankees in the AL East standings making this a big series for both clubs. Infielder Brandon Lowe leads the Rays with 16 home runs and 44 RBI and outfielder Austin Matthews leads Tampa Bay with a .314 batting average.

The Rays have injury concerns with the most significant being outfielder Guillermo Heredia listed as day to day with a wrist injury. Heredia has a .351 OBP with two bombs and eight RBI over 84 at-bats this season.
Yarbrough (5-3, 5.59 ERA) has a near-elite 1.08 WHIP and his 4.52 xFIP suggests some positive regression could be in store for Yarbrough this season. The Yankees have hit just 15 bombs against lefties this season with a .142 ISO and wRC+ of 82. Yarbrough allows 1.12 bombs per nine innings pitched and might be okay against the Yankees as he allows 12.8 percent of his fly balls to leave the yard. The Yankees high strikeout and an average walk rate of eight percent could benefit Yarbrough as he strikes out 6.33 and walks less than two per nine innings pitched.
Yankees Trade for Edwin Encarnacion
The Yankees weren’t satisfied scoring 5.4 runs per game so they traded for American League home run leader Edwin Encarnacion. Encarnacion will likely become the Yankees DH and could enter the lineup as soon as Monday night. New York is also planning to activate outfielder Giancarlo Stanton as soon as Tuesday. The Yankees have won five of their last ten games and enter Monday’s series with Tampa Bay riding a two-game winning streak.

New York still has a lengthy injury report but rumors are that outfielder Aaron Judge could be activated during this series with the Rays.
J.A. Happ (6-3, 4.66 ERA) has a 1.19 WHIP and his 4.93 xFIP suggests maybe some slight regression is in store for Happ at some point this season. Tampa Bay has blasted 109 home runs away from Tropicana Field and has a .142 ISO and 99 wRC+ against lefties this season. Happ allows 2.03 bombs per nine and could be in trouble against the Rays as 17 percent of his fly balls going for home runs this season. Tampa Bay has a high strikeout and walks rate and Happ could benefit from the strikeouts and the walks shouldn’t hurt Happ on Tuesday night.
- Yankees are 6-0 in Happ’s last 6 starts vs. American League East.
- Yankees are 7-0 in Happ’s last 7 starts with 4 days of rest.
- Rays are 27-55 in their last 82 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I think we might get a good price on Tuesday and I’m planning on playing the Yankees to defeat the Rays. New York was looking to be better against lefties and with the addition of Encarnacion and the activation of Stanton, they have that power. Happ hasn’t pitched that well at Yankee Stadium but the way the Rays struggle against lefties, Happ could look like Sandy Koufax Tuesday night.
Cash with the Flash and play the Yankees on Tuesday!!
Full-Game Total Pick
Neither side hits lefties very well and with the elite WHIP Yarbrough possesses, I don’t see the Yankees scoring that many runs on Tuesday. Tampa Bay is awful against lefties and with Happ and his ability to last at least seven innings, I don’t see Tampa Bay scoring much either. I saw the following trend I think might be helpful Tuesday;
- Under is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings in New York.
Cash with the Flash and play UNDER on Tuesday!!
