New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies
MLB: Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at 7:05 PM EST
The Mets have recently lost two in a row and four of six games and they are in 4th place in the NL East nearly 10 games out of first place. In their recent two losses, they gave up 18 runs while in winning their previous two games had only given up six runs. New York has split the six games facing the Phillies this season but has dropped 22 of their last 30 road games. The club is a few games under .500 and they rank near the middle of the pack in terms of runs scored and team ERA.
The Phillies snapped their seven-game losing streak with a win against the Mets in the first game of this series where they put up 13 runs. They had only totaled 15 runs in their seven-game skid. After leading the NL East for most of the season now they are a few games back of the Atlanta Braves in the division. Like the Mets, Philly ranks in the middle of the pack in runs scored and team ERA.
Vargas looks to pitch out of hot water
Jason Vargas (3-3 3.75 ERA) gets the start in this game against the Phillies and looks to pitch out of hot water after recently being fined by the club after an incident with a reporter after a recent game. The Mets have won three of his last four starts and after a stretch of only giving up two runs in three starts he has given up 10 runs in 14 2/3 innings in his last three outings. In his last start, he gave up four runs on four hits in four 2/3 innings in a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs. Vargas has one start against the Phillies this season in late April where he gave up one run in four 2/3 innings, but the bullpen did not do their job in a 6-1 New York loss.
Todd Frazier recently had two multi-hit games in a row where he went deep in one of them and is hitting nearly .300 this month. Pete Alonso has already broken the Mets rookie HR mark and it is not even the All-Star break and is among the NL leaders in RBI as well.
Pivetta looks to bounce back
Nick Pivetta (4-2 5.54 ERA) gets the nod in this division game and looks to bounce back after getting roughed up in his last start. In that outing he gave up six runs on seven hits, including two HR, in five 1/3 innings in a 7-4 loss to the Washington Nationals. The Phillies have lost three of his last four starts including his last two where he gave up 10 runs in 12 innings of work. Pivetta had only given up one run in two starts before struggling in his last two. In his lone start against the Mets in mid-April he gave up three runs on seven hits in five innings in a 14-3 Philadelphia win.

Bryce Harper leads the Phillies in RBI and a recent five-game hit streak was capped with two RBI doubles in Game 1 of this series after the Philly lineup struggled in their seven-game skid they had a season-high 19 hits in winning the first game of this series. Rhys Hoskins leads the Phillies in HR and he has gone yard in two of his last three games.
The Philadelphia Phillies are:
- 19-7 in their last 26 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400
The New York Mets are:
- 8-22 in their last 30 road games
- 5-13 in their last 18 road games vs. a team with a winning home record
- 6-15 in their last 21 road games vs. a team with a winning record
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Pivetta has not looked sharp in his last two outings, but while he may not have the best start in this game the lineup will help him out. They scored 14 runs in his lone start against the Mets this season and scored 13 runs in the first game of this series. Their bats will stay hot in this game at the expense of Vargas, who will get hit hard. Take the Phillies to win this game and send the Mets to yet another road loss.
Prediction: PICK: Phillies
Full-Game Total Pick
The total for Game 1 went Over and in Pivetta’s last start against the Mets, the total went Over as well. That trend will continue in this game, as the Phillies’ lineup will get it done in this game chasing Vargas early and often. In a high scoring game, the Phillies will get the W and total will go Over.
Prediction: PICK: Over
