Rangers hit high water mark
Not counting the results of Tuesday night’s game, the Rangers come into this series at 42-36, six games over .500. This is their high-water mark for the season and they have cut the Astros lead down to 6.5 games. games. Playing against the lowly Tigers this week, followed by a series at Tampa Bay over the weekend, they have a chance to chip away at that lead a little more.

The pitching has struggled. They have a team ERA of 4.87, which is 22nd in the league. They have a WHIP of 1.45, which is 28th. But they have their most effective pitcher, Mike Minor, on the mound Wednesday. Minor is 7-4 with a 2.52 ERA, which ranks third in all of baseball. He was impressive in his last time out against the Indians, allowing 1 run in 8 innings to capture his 7th win,
Tigers are struggling
The Detroit Tigers are home, so they have that going for them. But that’s about it. They are one of the worst teams in baseball, as they have a record of 26-47. They have lost 4 straight and 8 of their last 10 and they are 22 games behind first-place Minnesota in the AL Central. Wins are hard to come by when you can’t hit.
The Tigers are probably the worst offensive team in baseball. They average just 3.5 runs per game, which is 29th in the league. They hit just .230 as a team, which is 29th, and they have a slugging percentage of .379, which is 28th in baseball. They are 29th in home runs. Miguel Cabrera is hitting .296 with 4 HRs and 30 RBIs, while Nick Castellanos is hitting .269 with 7 HRs and 26 RBIs. Brandon Dixon is hitting .263 with 9 HRs and 30 RBIs, while JaCoby Jones is batting .252 with 9 HRs and 22 RBIs. Full-Game Side Bet
Take the Rangers here. Aside from the fact that they are just a flat out better team than the Tigers, the Rangers have a few things going for them. One, they have their best pitcher going in Minor. Minor has the 3rd lowest ERA in baseball and he will shut down the Tigers. Plus, the Rangers have owned the Tigers. They are 10-3 in the last 13 meetings in Detroit and 8-3 in the last 11 meetings with Detroit overall. Also, the Tigers are 1-4 in Boyds last 5 starts vs. Rangers.
Prediction: Texas -111
Full-Game Total Pick
Take the under. Minor allows less than 3 runs per game, so against the light-hitting Tigers, don’t expect them to get any more than 2 runs off him. Boyd is also having a good year with an ERA of just over 3. Look for both pitchers to control the game and keep it in the under. The under is 8-3 in Rangers last 11 vs. American League Central and 5-0 in Minor’s last 5 road starts. Also, the under is 2-0-2 in Boyd’s last 4 home starts and 4-1 in his last 5 starts during game 2 of a series.
