Seattle Mariners (57-34) vs. Los Angeles Angels (46-45)
Where and when: Angel Stadium, Los Angeles, California, Wednesday, 10:05 pm EST
Game 2 of a 3-game set against the visiting Seattle Mariners and the Los Angeles Angels will resume on Wednesday night at 10:05 pm EST at Angel Stadium in Los Angeles, California. The Mariners currently occupy 2nd place within the AL West division while the Angels are in 4th place. In their last outing, the Mariners would salvage their 3-game home set with a 6-4 home win versus the Colorado Rockies on 7-8-2018 where the Mainers would cash in on the money line as favorites (-140) while the over was the play with total runs being set at 8.5 for the game. Wade LeBlanc (5-0) remained undefeated on the season yet was certainly not nearly as sharp as he has been as he pitched 6 innings while allowing 4 runs on 5 hits along with 3 homers and an ERA of 3.39. Antonio Senzatela (3-2) picked up the loss in this matchup as he lasted 6 innings while surrendering 6 earned on 5 hits along with a homer for an ERA of 5.34. Dee Gordon and Ryan Healy were each 2-4 for the night, however, Healy bought in 5 RBI’s for Seattle in the win. Colorado only had 5 hits in this game as Trevor Story was 2-4 with 2 RBI’s in the loss. The win for Seattle halted a 2-game skid.
The Angels would win a 3-game home set versus the red-hot Dodgers at home on 7-8-2018 by picking up a 4-3 victory on Sunday night. The Angels would cash in on the money line (+105) while the under was the play with the run total being at 9 for the game. Andrew Heaney (5-6) picked up the win while going 7 innings while allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, 1 homer, and double-digit strikeouts (10) in the win with an overall ERA of 3.94. On the other hand, Alex Wood received the no decision as he lasted 6 innings while allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, a homer, and 4 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.88. The Angels only mustered 6 runs for the game but they certainly made them count. Justin Upton (1-4) hit a big single to bring in 2 RBI’s for the home team while Albert Pujols was 1-2 with a homer. Shohei Ohtani (1-1) also had an RBI for the Angels. The Dodgers had 5 hits for the game with Yasiel Puig going 1-2 with 3 RBI’s in defeat.
The Seattle Mariners come into this game losers of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 2-2-1. For the season, the Mariners are averaging 4.32 runs per game (21st) with a team batting average of .259 (4th), 108 homers (12th) along with 50 stolen bases (11th). Their pitching staff has certainly gotten better with time as they possess a respectable ERA of 3.91 (14th) with 780 strikeouts (12th) along with 43 quality starts (4th).
Gonzales Seeking 3rd Straight Win
Marco Gonzales (9-5) will come to the hill for the Mariners in game 1 looking to pick up his 3rd win in as many starts. He has only been credited with 2 earned runs on 11 hits in his last 2 games after allowing 14 earned runs on 22 hits and 4 homers in his 3 starts prior. The under has been the result in his last 4 starts while the team is 5-2 in the lefty’s last 7 starts. In his last outing, Gonzales lasted 6 innings while allowing 1 run on 5 hits and 7 strikeouts in a 4-1 home win versus the Angels on 7-5-2018. In his last outing prior to this versus the Angels, the left-hander lasted 5 innings while allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and 7 strikeouts in an 8-6 home win on 6-13-2018.
Martin Maldonado and Jefry Marte are both 1-2 against Gonzales while Andrelton Simmons (2-4) and Albert Pujols (1-4) have also had a bit of success against the left-hander in their careers. Mike Trout is 1-3 while Kole Calhoun, Justin Upton, and Luis Valbuena are a combined 0-7 against Gonzales.
Lack of Run Support Dooms Barria Once Again
The Angels enter this game winners of 3 of their last 5 games to where the O/U was 1-4. For the season, the Angels are averaging 4.34 runs per game (19th) with a team batting average of .242 (21st), 119 homers (6th) along with 40 stolen bases (18th). Their pitching staff has an ERA of 3.86 (11th) with 830 strikeouts (5th) with 34 quality starts on the year (22nd).
Jaime Barria (5-5) will get the start for the Angels in game 2 hoping that he can receive some type of run support from an offense that has only averaged 2.2 runs in their last 4 games. In his last outing, he pitched 5.1 innings while allowing 2 runs on 5 hits in a 4-1 loss at Seattle on 7-5-2018. In his outing against the Mariners prior on 6-12-2018, Barria pitched 5 innings while surrendering 3 runs (2 ER) on 8 hits and 2 homers in a 6-3 road loss. Barria only has 5 earned runs on 13 hits in his last 3 starts while the under is 4-2 in his last 6 starts. Nonetheless, the Angels have struggled with Barria at the helm as they are winless in his last 5 appearances.
- The Mariners are 10-3 in last 13 games on grass
- The Under is 10-4-1 in Mariners last 15 games
- The Under is 10-4-1 in Mariners last 15 on grass
- The Angels are 9-4 in last 13 home games
The Angels picked up a huge series victory against the Dodgers in interleague play last weekend and combine this with the fact that they are winners of 5 of their last 8 home games, despite the Mariners having the upper hand for most of the year against the Angels, I feel as if the Angels may indeed sneak out a win in this contest. Barria’s numbers can be misleading as he has been decent at the mound, however, as stated, Barria has only received 11 runs of support in his last 5 starts. I expect him to be very familiar with the lineup for the Mariners and pitch effectively from the mound. Gonzales, on the other hand, has also been solid lately and possesses a decent record against the Angels in recent outings (1-0 with 2 no decisions). With that being said, momentum from such a big series win against a team such as the Dodgers can do wonders for a dangerous team that is currently having a middle-of-the-road type of season. It is for this reason that I will back the Angels to squeak out an excitingly tough victory in game 2 on Wednesday night against a Seattle team looking to end their recent skid to where they dropped 3 of their last 5 games.
