St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago White Sox
When and Where: Wednesday, July 11 at 8:10 p.m. ET at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, IL
The Cardinals have won three of their last five games as they sit seven games back of the first place Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. St. Louis has struggled at times over the past couple weeks. Chicago, similarly, has struggled lately. It’s been a bit worse for the White Sox, however, as they’ve lost nine of their last 11 games.
It’s been an inconsistent stretch for the Cardinals. St. Louis is 4-7 in its last 11 games. The Cardinals haven’t been as solid offensively as they have in years past, ranking in the bottom half of baseball in most categories. St. Louis is led by Jose Martinez, who collected three hits in a loss to the Giants Sunday. Yairo Munoz hit a home run in that defeat. He’s batting .289 in his 149 at-bats this season. The Cardinals need him moving forward as they make a playoff push.
Luke Weaver is 5-7 with a 4.92 ERA on the season in 18 starts. He’s coming off a truly terrific start against the Giants where he allowed two earned runs over eight innings in a win. That start came after a brutal one against the Braves where Weaver allowed eight earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched. Weaver had a string of starts, three of them, where he allowed exactly four earned runs. Since then, Weaver has allowed exactly two earned runs in two of his past three starts.
Carolos Rodon has pitched better since returning from injury in June. Rodon is 1-3 with a 4.29 ERA in six starts in total this season. After allowing five earned runs in a loss to the Rangers June 30, he bounced back with a strong start against the Astros, allowing two earned runs over six innings. He’ll look to continue his strong play Wednesday night. The White Sox have only won one of his six starts this season.
Outfielder Avisail Garcia, who has enjoyed a solid season, was sent to the disabled list with a hamstring strain. Garcia is batting .282 with nine home runs and 17 RBIs. Garcia has been productive for the White Sox, but Chicago has relied on Jose Abreu and Yolmer Sanchez to produce throughout the season. Sanchez has seven RBIs over his past 10 games.
- Cardinals are 38-17 in their last 55 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
- Cardinals are 4-0 in Weavers last 4 road starts.
- Cardinals are 5-1 in Weavers last 6 road starts vs. a team with a losing record.
- White Sox are 2-7 in their last 9 interleague home games vs. a team with a winning record.
- White Sox are 1-4 in Rodon’s last 5 starts vs. a team with a winning record.
- White Sox are 1-4 in Rodon’s last 5 starts with 5 days of rest.
- White Sox are 3-13 in Rodon’s last 16 starts during game 2 of a series.
- White Sox are 1-5 in Rodon’s last 6 starts.
Rodon hasn’t necessarily gotten the run support this year. Weaver hasn’t been sharp at times this season, especially lately. He recently allowed eight earned runs in a start. It just so happens, however, that Weaver faces an underwhelming offense in Chicago.
