Los Angeles Angels vs. Seattle Mariners
Where and when: T-Mobile Park, Seattle, Washington, Friday, 10:10 pm EST
Two bottom teams within the AL West division will meet at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, as the Los Angeles Angels will look to get back on the winning track versus the Seattle Mariners with game-one being on Friday night at 10:10 pm EST. The Angels completed a sweep versus the Mariners on July 15th in an offensive set that saw the home team posting twenty-eight runs in three outings.
To say that Seattle has been in a rut lately is an understatement. They are losers of nine of their last ten games, overall, while during their last six-game road stand winning just two of six games versus the St. Louis Cardinals along with the second-place team in the AL West in the Oakland Athletics. In fact, the Mariners have only won nineteen times in twenty-nine home games in 2019 as their pitching, in particular, has been a huge cause for great concern.
The staff has given up an average of just under ten runs per game in their last five outings. Seattle has dropped seven of their last matchups versus the Angels; However, the team has picked up wins in eight of twelve games at T-Mobile Park.
Despite ending the five-game winning streak and missing out on the sweep versus the first-place Houston Astros in their last set, the Angels are coming ever so close to side-stepping the Texas Rangers for third place in the division. What is surprising is that the team has been able to win without Mike Trout in the lineup. The outfielder has not suited up due to a calf injury while being questionable for the finale of their three-game set versus the Astros.
Nonetheless, Trout continues to bat over .300 for the year while having six hits, two doubles, four homers, along with twelve RBI’s in his last four starts. He went 0-1 versus the Mariners in his last start, however, the Angels racked up the 6-3 victory in the end.
Leake seeks redemption versus Angels after last loss
Since being dealt to the Mariners in 2017, veteran Mike Leake (7-8) has won three of five starts versus the Angels in Seattle. In fact, his last outing at T-Mobile Park versus the Angels resulted in a win despite the right-hander giving up two homers along with two earned runs in seven frames in a 4-3 victory. However, Leake gave up four earned runs in just ⅔ of an inning in a 13-0 demolishing at Angels Park on July 12th, his most recent start.

He will not be looking forward to facing Trout (if available) as the slugger is batting .538, seven doubles, three homers, along with six RBI’s, lifetime, versus Leake. Also, Justin Upton, Albert Pujols, Shohei Ohtani, along with Andrelton Simmons are all batting .364 or better versus the right-hander. Leake, however, happens to be a winner in five of his last eight home games.
Pitching is seemingly improving for Angels
No pitcher has been assigned for the Angels as of yet. However, during the team’s five-game winning streak, the staff allowed an average of just under three runs per game before a horrible outing for Felix Pena (7-2), who allowed eight earned in just four innings versus the Astros in an 11-2 defeat. Nonetheless, pitching has been a huge catalyst in allowing the team to win twelve of their last eighteen, overall, despite the staff possessing a collective ERA of 4.88 on the year.
FINAL: Astros 11, Angels 2
— Los Angeles Angels (@Angels) July 18, 2019
Pena along with rookie Griffin Canning (3-5) have pitched the most innings for the Angels this year, yet possess ERA’s of just under five on the season. Even worse, Trevor Cahill along with Matt Harvey each have three wins on the season while having ERA’s of 6.56 and 6.88. It is clear that the unit can indeed struggle at times, however, benefit from having one of the more dangerous lineups in the league.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Angels’ lineup has owned Leake in past matchups. And with the team eyeing third place within the division, look for them to come out focused to get a much-needed win on Friday. Again, Trout is questionable with a calf injury, however, the team is batting a collective .262 on the year, which will spell doom for one of the worst rotation/bullpen in the MLB.
Prediction: Pick: Los Angeles Angels
Full-Game Total Pick
I will back the over considering past performances by Leake versus the Angels. Also, the staff for the Angels have also been known to give up a hunk of runs throughout the season as well. With that being the case, look for each to have more than enough opportunities to put runs on the board. In all, look for the over to be the strong play in the end.
Prediction: Pick: Over
