San Diego Padres vs. Chicago Cubs
MLB: Friday, July 19, 2019 at 2:20 PM EST
The Padres snapped their four-game losing streak in their last game and in the slide their pitching was less than stellar giving up 28 runs. The club is three games under .500 on the season and while they are, pretty much, out of the NL West they are still in the Wild Card race. However, they need to pick it up at the dish, as the team does not rank in the top 20 in MLB in runs scored.
The Cubs have won two in a row and five of their last six games and they are in first place in the NLK Central 2.5 games up on the Milwaukee Brewers. The club has only given up five runs in their last two games and on the season, Chicago has been balanced ranked 8th in team ERA and 12th in runs scored.
Lauer has been steady
Eric Lauer (5-7 4.04 ERA) gets the nod in this series opener and he has been steady in his last few starts. the Padres have won his last two starts and in his last three outings he has given up five runs in 18 innings of work. In his last start, he gave up two runs on four hits in six innings in a 3-2 win over the L.A. Dodgers. This is Lauer’s first start of the season facing the Cubs and San Diego had lost two in a row on the road with him on the hill before winning his last start, which was in L.A.

Eric Hosmer leads the Padres in batting average and RBI, but he has struggled as of late only batting .173 in July. Hunter Renfroe leads the team in HR and in a recent three-game stretch he went 5 for 12.
Keep it up at home
Jon Lester (9-6 3.74 ERA) goes for the Cubs in this game and the team has won his last five home starts. In his last outing, he was at home and gave up three runs on eight hits in six 2/3 innings in a 10-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. This is Lester’s first start of the season facing the Padres.
Kris Bryant leads the Cubs nearing hitting .300 on the season and he has gone yard in two recent games and is batting .381 this month.
Three Chicago players have at least 20 HR including Kyle Schwarber, who had a homer in three straight games before failing to do so in his last game.
The Chicago Cubs are:
- 5-1 in their last 6 home games
- 5-1 in their last 6 games
The San Diego Padres are:
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Cubs are, by far, the hotter team and they have played well at home but take on a Padres team that has played better on the road than at home. However, with Lester on the hill at home San Diego is in for a long game, as he will have a good start. Lauer will pitch well, but Lester will have the better outing and lead the Cubs to the win.
Prediction: PICK: Cubs
Full-Game Total Pick
In the Windy City in this season opener, both pitcher’s will have a good outing, so we are looking at a pitcher’s duel. Obviously, in that kind of game, the Under is the pick and that is the pick for this ML matchup.
Prediction: PICK: Under
