The Detroit Tigers host the Toronto Blue Jays Friday in the first game of a three-game set. The Tigers have the second worst record in the league at 29-62 while the Blue Jays aren’t much better at 36-62. Right hander Jordan Zimmerman (0-6) gets the start for the Tigers while right-hander Marcus Stroman (5-10) is slated to get the start for the Blue Jays. Game time is 7:10 p.m. Eastern at Comerica Park in Detroit.
Blue Jays can’t take flight
The Toronto Blue Jays haven’t won a series since the middle of June. That continued this when they dropped 3 out of 4 to the Red Sox. They were blanked 5-0 on Thursday, getting only 2 hits – one by Justin Smoak and one by Brandon Drury. Thomas Pannone (2-3) got the loss. The Jays now stand at 36-62. They are in 4th place in the AL East, 26 games behind the first-place Yankees.
The Blue Jays have struggled to score runs. They only average 4.3 runs per game, which is 26th in the MLB. They have a team batting average of .233, which is 30th in the league, and they have a slugging percentage of .411, which is 23rd. They are 15th in home runs. Lourdes Gurriel leads the Jays batting 297 with 17 HRs and 39 RBIs while Eric Sogard is hitting .299 with 10 HRs and 28 RBIs. Freddie Galvis is batting .268 with 15 HRs and 46 RBIs while Justin Smoak is hitting .217 with 15 HRs and 40 RBIs. Rowdy Tellez is hitting .228 with 14 HRs and 40 RBIs while rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is batting .239 with 8 HRs and 26 RBIs. Also, Randal Grichuk is hitting .235 with 16 HRs and 43 RBIs.
The Blue Jays pitching has not been very good. They have a team ERA of 4.92, which is 22nd in the MLB. They have a WHIP at 1.47, which is 28th in the league. Marcus Stroman gets the start for Toronto. The right-hander is 5-10 with an ERA of 3.25. He’s pitched well but has just gotten no run support making his record look a lot worse than he has pitched.
Wins hard to come by for Tigers
The Detroit Tigers are in a really bad way. They have lost three straight, not including Thursday night’s game, and have dropped 8 of their last 9. They have plummeted to the bottom of the standings in the AL Central with a record of 29-62. Their latest was to the Indians, who beat them 7-2 Wednesday. Starter Spencer Turnbull (3-9) pitched okay, allowing 3 runs in 6 innings, but the bullpen got rocked for 4 runs. It didn’t really matter as the Tigers only scored 2 runs. Nick Castellanos had two hits including a home run and an RBI. Jeimer Candelario also drove in a run.
Not sure how a win and a home run are comparable. Anyway, just @ us next time. pic.twitter.com/DbcnclvjBh

The Tigers are also probably the worst offensive team in baseball. They average just 3.6 runs per game, which is 29th in the league. They hit just .234 as a team, which is 29th, and they have a slugging percentage of .385, which is 29th in baseball. They are 29th in home runs. Miguel Cabrera is hitting .289 with 5 HRs and 37 RBIs, while Nick Castellanos is hitting .283 with 10 HRs and 35 RBIs. Brandon Dixon is hitting ,241 with 12 HRs and 37 RBIs, while Christin Stewart is batting .234 with 7 HRs and 32 RBIs. Also, Niko Goodrum is hitting .242 with 7 HRs and 32 RBIs while Harold Castro is batting .311.
- Tigers are 8-20 in their last 28 during game 1 of a series.
- Tigers are 8-20 in their last 28 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
- Tigers are 15-40 in their last 55 Friday games.
- Tigers are 14-41 in their last 55 home games.
- Tigers are 11-42 in their last 53 overall.
- Tigers are 11-42 in their last 53 games on grass.
- Tigers are 0-5 in their last 5 vs. American League East.
- Blue Jays are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. American League Central.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Take the Blue Jays. Who do you pick between two of the worst teams in baseball? You take the team with the better pitcher, and that is clearly the Blue Jays. Marcus Stroman has pitched well despite his 5-10 record and he should be able to pick up a win against the light-hitting Tigers. Plus, the Tigers are just in freefall right now, having lost 8 of their last 9 not counting Thursday’s game versus the Indians. Unfortunately, Zimmerman will remain winless.
Prediction: Toronto -145
Full-Game Total Pick
Take the under. Not only are these two of the worst teams in baseball, they are two of the worst offensive teams in baseball. The Tigers, in fact, are the worst. I dont look for them to score more than a run or two against Stroman. The Blue Jays are facing one of the worst statistical starters in baseball in Zimmerman so they’ll score enough to win, but still take the under. The under is 7-2 in Blue Jays last 9 overall. Also, the under is 7-3-1 in Tigers last 11 home games and 4-6 in their last 20 vs. American League East.
