New York Mets at New York Yankees
When and Where: Sunday July 22 at 8 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY
The Mets lost Saturday to the Yankees after winning the first game of the series by a run Friday. The Mets sit in last place in a competitive NL East. It’s been a difficult year for the New York Mets. The Yankees bounced back Saturday with a win, scoring seven runs in the process. The Yankees are chasing the Red Sox, who have a five game lead in the AL East.
Ace on the Mound
Jacob deGrom has been one of the best pitchers this year, even if the Mets cannot give him the necessary run support at times. The righty is coming off a terrific start against the Phillies where he didn’t allow an earned run over eight innings in a win. In fact, the Mets have won back-to-back of deGrom starts as he’s gone eight innings each time. He, however, didn’t get the win in either start, which shows how poorly the offense has been for the Mets this season.
The Mets have flashed some offensive life during the first two games of the series, scoring a combined 13 runs so far. New York’s led by Michael Conforto, who has had four total RBIs in the series thus far. The 25-year-old is only batting .221, but he’s been a run producer for the Mets. Yoenis Cespedes returned after an over two-month absence Friday, homering in the New York Mets win. He’s essential for the second-half success of the Mets.
Chasing the Red Sox
The Yankees probably need to add another arm before the deadline to compete with Boston. The Yankees don’t have enough solid starters. Masahiro Tanaka has been inconsistent so far this year in 15 starts. He’s 7-2 with a 4.54 ERA. Tanaka has the luxury of pitching for one of the better offenses in baseball. The Yankees, in fact, have won seven of Tanaka’s previous 10 starts. Tanaka, however, has only outright won three of them. He’s only had three decisions in total during that span.
The Yankees offense hasn’t had any problems scoring runs this season, ranking third in baseball. New York has scored at least five runs in eight of its last nine games. It’s a dangerous offense, led by the power hitter Aaron Judge. Judge has homered 26 times and driven in 61 runs to pace the Yankees. Greg Bird drove in two runs in Saturday’s win as did Austin Romine. Romine has six RBIs in his past six games altogether.
- Mets are 6-1 in their last 7 after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- Mets are 4-1 in their last 5 games following a loss.
- Mets are 4-1 in their last 5 when their opponent scores 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- Yankees are 1-4 in their last 5 games following a win.
- Yankees are 2-5 in Tanakas last 7 starts after scoring 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- Yankees are 1-4 in Tanakas last 5 starts vs. National League East.
deGrom is one of the best pitchers in baseball, which will play a factor Sunday night. He’s fully capable of slowing down the dynamic offense for the Yankees. Tanaka hasn’t had a loss in a decision for awhile, so he should be able to put together a solid performance against the Mets. But deGrom, in the end, will be too much.
