The Cincinnati Reds travel to Detroit to play the Tigers in this interleague matchup. The Reds, to nobody's surprise, are struggling to start the season. Coming into the season, they weren’t anyone's pick to win the NL Central, and they’re living up to those low expectations. They’re 2-4 on the season and struggling to get anything going. While the season is just beginning, it is very important for them to get some things going before the season officially turns sideways, and can’t turn things around.
The Tigers are treading water to start the season. They enter this weekend series with the Reds at 4-3, and are on pace to destroy their win total from 2019...if there was actually going to be 162 games. The Tigers have a young team and are looking to take the Astros route from years back. They are looking to lose games, stockpile draft picks, and cash them in for young and under contract stars in the draft. If things keep up though, they may be fighting for a playoff spot. Is 2020 weird? Just what I thought.
The Reds need to turn things aroundWithout question, the Reds have some talent on their roster. For a change, they made some offseason moves looking to compete, signing Nick Castellanos and Mike Moustakas to big deals. They signed Wade Miley and Pedro Strop to bolster up the pitching staff, and to this date, those additions haven’t translated to wins. As I said above, this season has the chance to get off the rails quickly.

The Reds pitching staff is on paper, one of the best in the league. Trevor Bauer, Luis Castillo, and Sonny Gray join the aforementioned Wade Miley to combat each team in the league. When this group is right, they should have no issue shutting down opposing offenses. To this point, that hasn’t been the case. It’s only a matter of time for this rotation to shore things up, and combined with a good lineup, I wouldn’t expect the Reds to be bad for so long. However, with the short season, time is running out.
The Tigers look to continue their early season successIf you told me coming into the season that the Tigers would be nearing ⅙ of their schedule, and be above .500, I would not only have called you crazy but told you to check their record from last season. They finished with under 50 wins a season ago, and failed to compete in most of their games. The early returns are that this team has improved, but we’ll see if they can keep the good times rolling. I wouldn’t hold my breath.
If there’s one thing the Tigers can hang their hat on, it’s their farm system, and that’s what happens when you are consistently bad and get some valuable draft picks. In a couple seasons, hopefully, this team would look back at this couple year stretch with a smile, and know that it was all worth the struggles. Keep an eye on these three names: Casey Mize, Matt Madding, and Alex Feudo. If those guys pan out, this team will be scary in the near future.
- The Tigers are 3-8 last 11 vs. NL Central.
- The Tigers are 2-5 against the run line in 2020
- The Reds are 4-0 last 4 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Reds are 4-1 last 5 road games.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I don’t expect the Reds to be bad this season. While their early season returns aren’t positive, the talent on this roster is too much to ignore. I expect their turnaround to start sooner rather than later, and it will start with this matchup with the Tigers. The Reds have a much superior roster than Detroit, and will show it in this one. Take the Reds with ease.
Full-Game Total Pick
This game has all the makings of an over. The Tigers poor pitching staff will get rocked early by the Reds, and with the bullpen into the game early, the Reds will pour it on. Eventually the Tigers will get some things going, but it will be too late to win. However, it will be good news for the over bettors all across the country.
