Houston Astros vs Los Angeles Angels

Where: Angel Stadium

When: Saturday, August 1, 2020, 7:07 pm ET

We have an American League West matchup to discuss when the Houston Astros meet the Los Angeles Angels for game two of their three-game scheduled series. This preview was written prior to the start of game one and all stats and opinions are based on the stats from Thursday’s completed play.

Houston is off to a 3-3 start to its season and is expecting righty Zach Greinke to make the start. Los Angeles is 2-5 this season and will look to right-hander Griffin Canning to make the start against the Astros.

Astros Looking to Go On a Run

Houston is playing .500 ball and enters this matchup coming off a two-game series home loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Astros have scored 33 runs with six bombs over their first six games and you’d think that would give them more than a .500 record, right? The bullpen has just three holds and one save over their last six games and that’s something we should monitor closely as the season progresses.

Greinke (0-0, 8.10) had a rough outing against the Seattle Mariners, allowing three earned runs and scattering four hits with two walks and two strikeouts over 4.1 innings pitched in a 7-6 loss. The veteran righty is up against an Angels offense that has scored 33 runs with eleven home runs over their first seven games.

Angels Hoping to Get on Track

The Angels are off to a slow start to its season and series’ losses to Oakland and Seattle hasn’t helped the cause much. Los Angeles scores just under five runs per game but one save and just two holds aren’t going to get the job done. All-Star outfielder Mike Trout is batting .292 and LA will need him to get on track if the Angels want to avoid the AL West cellar.

Canning (0-1, 5.79) allowed three earned runs including a bomb over 4.2 innings pitched in a road loss to the Oakland Athletics. Canning did strikeout seven Athletics while walking just two and he’s up against an Astros offense with a low strikeout rate with a 13.1 percent walk rate against righties this season.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

The Astros will likely be a heavy favorite of more than -200 and we’ll have to play the run line if we want to bet on Houston. We do want to bet on the Astros and Greinke. Los Angeles has good players but a lousy bullpen and Greinke is going to have a bounce-back performance on Saturday evening. The Astros offense is as good as it gets, even when they don’t know what pitch is going to be thrown. I’m siding with Houston and will spot the Angels 1.5 runs.

Prediction: Astros

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

I haven’t seen a total yet but I suspect that both teams are going to score runs and I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised to see more than ten runs scored in this matchup. I see Houston hammering Canning and I also suspect we’ll see some Angels bats go off at home against Greinke. I’m not a fan of either bullpen and I’m playing the OVER in this one.

Prediction: Over
