Washington Nationals (58-56, 29-28 Away) at Chicago Cubs (66-48, 35-21 Home)
MLB: Friday, August 10, 2018, Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois, 2:20 PM ET
The Washington Nationals were in a solid form of three straight victories including the one over Atlanta in the opening game of the series, but they suffered a couple of losses in the next two games and are now six wins behind the Philadelphia Phillies and four behind the Braves. On the other hand, the Chicago Cubs won five out of the previous eight games and they are battling with the Milwaukee Brewers for the top of the NL Central, so every win counts now.
The pitching matchup for Friday’s tilt will give us Jeremy Hellickson for Washington Nationals against the Chicago Cubs’ Kyle Hendricks. First pitch was set for 2:20 PM ET.
The Nationals disappointed in Atlanta despite a good offensive display
Washington suffered the second straight defeat as they scored only three runs and conceded eight in the third game of the series with the Atlanta Braves. The Nationals took an early 1-0 lead but that was pretty much it from the visitors who struggled to score even though they recorded ten hits in opposite to Atlanta’s 12. Washington didn’t exploit a pair of the Braves’ errors and lost in the end, 8-3.
Jeremy Hellickson is listed as a starting pitcher against the Chicago Cubs, and he’s coming from an 8-11 record in 2017, a 5.43 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, 47 walks, and 96 strikeouts in 30 games in total. Hellickson started 16 games in this season and has five wins and two losses as he pitched 78 innings, allowing 73 hits and 35 runs with 13 walks and 59 strikeouts.
The Cubs were held off the scoreboard in Kansas City
Chicago opened the series with the Kanas City Royals with a couple of wins, conceding just one run in the process, but the Royals responded with a massive, 9-0 victory, surprising the favored visitors. The Cubs won only three bases and had three hits, while the Royals won even 16 bases and recorded nine hits, but a 9-0 win was a bit too much and it didn’t reflect the situation on the field.
Kyle Hendricks is set to start against the Washington Nationals, and he’s coming from a 7-5 record in 2017, a 3.03 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, 40 walks, and 123 strikeouts in 24 games overall. Hendricks started 23 games in this campaign and has eight wins and nine losses as he pitched 132 innings, allowing 126 hits and 63 runs with 34 walks and 110 strikeouts. The Cubs are 4-1 in Hendricks’ last five starts; 8-3 in Hendricks’ previous 11 starts during game one of a series, while they are 8-3 in Hendricks’ last 11 starts vs. National League East opponents.
- 6-1 in their last seven vs. National League East rivals
- 16-7 in their last 23 games played at home
- 9-4 in their last 13 games played on Friday
- 1-4 in their last five games played on the road vs. an opponent with a winning record
- 1-4 in their last five games played on the road vs. an opponent with a home winning percentage of greater than .600
- 3-10 in their last 13 vs. an opponent with a winning record
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Chicago won 13 out of the previous 21 H2H encounters including three out of the last five, while the Cubs were victorious in six out of the past nine meetings at the Wrigley Field. The hosts are looking for redemption after a big loss to the Royals, so I am backing them to open the series with a victory.
Prediction: Chicago Cubs (-150)
Full-Game Total Pick
When it comes to the points, under is 4-1 in Hendricks’ last five starts vs. Nationals; under is 4-1 in Cubs previous five in total, while under is 9-2 in Nationals last 11 vs. National League Central opponents.
Prediction: Under 8.5 (+105)
Full-Game Prop Bet
Chicago is looking to bounce back after a disastrous loss to Kansas City, so I believe they will make amends for a 9-0 loss and score at least five runs in front of their own fans. They scored over 4.5 in four out of the previous six games.
Prediction: Team Totals: Chicago Cubs Over 4.5 (-115)
First Five Innings Side Pick
I expect a strong start from the hosts on this one, and although they have the strength to come from behind and win in the end, I believe they will be up after the first five innings.
Prediction: Chicago Cubs (-150)
First Five Innings Total Bet
Even though I am backing the Cubs to win and I expect them to try to decide the clash as soon as possible, I don’t think the rivals will produce more than four or five runs in the opening five innings.
Prediction: Under 5 (-130)
First Five Innings Prop Prediction
I don’t think there will be plenty of action early in the game, but the opening inning should produce a couple of hits, and I am backing the hosts to display a better performance in the first inning.
Prediction: Most Hits in the 1st Inning: Chicago Cubs (+135)
