We have American League baseball on tap for Wednesday afternoon when the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians tangle in game three of a three-game series. This preview was published prior to the start of Tuesday’s game two matchup and all opinions are based on the stats from Monday MLB action.
Boston is third in the American League East and is currently undecided as to who will make the start against Cleveland. The Indians are first in the American League Central division and will look to righty Shane Bieber as their probable starter against the Red Sox Wednesday afternoon.
Red Sox Three Game Losing Streak
Boston is slipping further and further away from an opportunity to reach the postseason. Being 8.5 games back in the American League Wild Card race wouldn’t look as daunting if Boston hadn’t of lost seven of their last 10 games like they have. The Red Sox entered Tuesday night with a three-game losing streak and they desperately need to win games otherwise their season ends at game 162. Boston has outscored their opponents by 59 runs and sports a 32-27 record away from Fenway Park this season.

The Red Sox are undecided as to who will make the start on Wednesday afternoon and whoever does will have to deal with a Cleveland Indians offense scoring 4.55 runs per game with 92 bombs at Progressive Field this season.
Indians Overtake Twins for First Place in AL Central
Thanks to a Carlos Santana walk-off home run, the Cleveland Indians have overtaken the Minnesota Twins and is now first in the American League Central division. The Indians have won eight of their last 10 games and have a two-game winning streak entering Tuesday night’s game with the Red Sox. Cleveland has outscored its opponents by 87 runs and boasts a 39-24 record at Progressive Field this season.
And oh yeah, Cleveland is in first place in the Central!

Outfielder Yasiel Puig has been suspended for three-games thanks to a fight he was in on the night he was traded to the Indians and won’t be playing in this series with the Red Sox. Puig has one bomb and six RBI with Cleveland since coming over in the Trevor Bauer trade.
Bieber (12-4, 3.28 ERA) has an elite, 1.00 WHIP and his 3.16 xFIP suggests maybe Bieber has been a bit unlucky and some positive regression might be in store for the second year righty this season. Bieber has allowed 11 earned runs over his previous 37.2 innings pitched and strikes out 11.11 per nine innings pitched with 1.84 walks and 1.21 bombs allowed per nine innings pitched this season.
Boston scores an average of 5.49 runs per game with 92 home runs away from Fenway Park and has clubbed 125 taters against right-handed pitching this season.
- Indians are 8-1 in Bieber’s last 9 starts vs. American League East.
- Indians are 6-1 in Bieber’s last 7 starts on grass.
- Indians are 5-1 in Bieber’s last 6 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.
- Red Sox are 0-4 in their last 4 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
- Red Sox are 0-9 in their last 9 vs. a team with a winning record.
- Red Sox are 0-5 in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Boston isn’t the same team they were one year ago and the Indians have the best record in baseball since June 4, 2019. Plus the Tribe is hot and have a young right-hander on the hill named Shane Bieber who has been nothing short of fantastic this season. Boston might get a run or two but Cleveland shouldn’t lose this game Wednesday afternoon.
Full-Game Total Pick
Not sure who is pitching for Boston and Vegas hasn’t posted a total yet, so I’m not that confident about a total for Wednesday. I do know Bieber has been fantastic and the Red Sox hit righties. I saw the following trends I think could be helpful Wednesday.
- Over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.
- Over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Cleveland.
