Cincinnati Reds vs. Washington Nationals
MLB: Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at 4:05 PM EST
The Reds have really been up and down lately with win streaks and losing streaks and while under .500 they are still in the playoff picture. They are 7.5 games out of first place in the NL Central and 5.5 games out of the 2nd NL Wild Card spot.
The Nationals took the first game of this series and they have been pretty solid in the last several games. While several games out of first place in the NL East the Nats have the wild card lead.
Coming into this series the Reds had lost 20 of 26 games facing the Nationals.
Keep it up rookie
Cincy rookie Aristides Aquino has been on fire since being called up from the minors and he recently set an MLB record with the most HR (8) in the first 12 games of his career.
The Reds had won two in a row before recently losing two in a row including dropping the first game of this series. Eugenio Suarez leads the team in both HR and RBI and he recently had his three-game HR streak end. He has four HR this month, but players are failing to get on base for him, as in August all of his HR have been solo shots and he only has four RBI.
Trevor Bauer (10-8 3.09 ERA) makes his 3rd start for the Reds after being traded to them from the Cleveland Indians. He did not have a great first start for his new club giving up three runs in a Cincy loss, but in his last start, he had a good one giving up one run in seven innings of work in a 7-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Ace has not looked like Ace in last two starts
Nationals’ ace Stephen Strasburg (14-5 3.72 ERA) is tied for 3rd in the Majors in wins, but he has not pitched like an ace in his last two outings. Washington has lost his last two starts where in the first he gave up nine runs and in the last start, he gave up three runs in seven innings in a 7-6 loss to the New York Mets. The Nats have won seven in a row with Strasburg before his last two starts and while this is his first start of the season against the Reds Washington has won his last four starts facing them.
Anthony Rendon, who leads the Nats in batting average, HR, and RBI, went hitless in the first game of this series, but he has been hot-hitting nearly .350 with 30 RBI in a recent 31-game stretch. Trea Turner went yard and had four RBI in the first game of this series and he is batting .341 this month. Washington has won 23 of their last 30 games facing a team with a losing record.
The Washington Nationals are:
- 5-2 in their last 7 overall
- 23-7 in their last 30 vs. a team with a losing record
- 31-15 in their last 46 games vs. a right-handed starter
The Cincinnati Reds are:
- 3-7 in their last 10 vs. National League East
- 7-18 in their last 25 Wednesday games
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Nationals have lost both of Strasburg’s last two starts where he was not that bad in the last one. However, the team has won 41 of his last 60 home starts and that is a trend that will continue in this game. They have won his last four starts facing the Reds and he will have a good outing and get some help from the lineup. Bauer will be decent, but Strasburg will have the better outing and lead the Nationals to the win
Prediction: PICK: Nationals
Full-Game Total Pick
While the total of Game 1 of this series went Over the total has gone Under in five of the last seven games between these teams. I look for that trend to continue in this game, as I think both starters will not be hit hard. Strasburg will have a great outing back at home while Bauer will be decent, but not great. In this Game 3 of this NL matchup take the Under.
Prediction: PICK: Under
