Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals
MLB: Sunday, August 2, 2020 at 2:05 p.m. ET
After losing three of their first four games the White Sox regrouped and have won three in a row routing the Royals in Game 2 on Saturday. The team is still trying to catch the Minnesota Twins, who are off to a hot start, in the AL Central and at the same time keep the Royals in the basement of the division.
While the Royals have not been getting the wins, their pitching and lineup have been decent. Still, they could use a win in this series finale to stay in the AL Central race and avoid the series sweep. KC had won four in a row at home against the White Sox before losing the first two games of this series.
Chase Looks to Be Better Second Time AroundDylan Chase (0-1 15.43 ERA) gets the nod in this game and in his first start of the season he only lasted two 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits in a 4-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians. Last season as a rookie Chase was 4-7 with an ERA of 5.79 but did strike out 81 batters in 73 innings. In Chase’s only career start against the Riyals he was lit up for six runs in six innings in an 11-0 Chicago loss.
In the Game 2 rout of the Royals, the White Sox scored 11 runs on a whopping 21 hits and Luis Robert and Eloy Jimenezeach had four hits.
Chicago ranks a respectable 11th in the Majors in runs scored but only 25th in team ERA. However, they have only allowed seven runs in their three-game win streak giving up five of them in the Game 2 win Saturday.
The Pitching Has Been SolidThe Royals pitching is the main reason they are not well under .500 with a pretty solid team ERA and they rank in the top 10 in the Majors in team WHIP. Jakob Junis makes his first start of the season after missing his first start after testing positive for COVID-19 early in "spring" training. In seven career starts against the White Sox, he is 3-2 with an ERA of 5.10.
Four players for the balanced Kansas City lineup have at least two HR and three players have at least five RBI. Jorge Soler hit 48 HR last season and while he has gone yard twice this season he has slumped in the last few games after a good start.
The Kansas City Royals are:
The Chicago White Sox are:
- 8-19 in their last 27 road games vs. a right-handed starter
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
In Junis' first start of the season, I think he will have a good one and the KC lineup will get to Chase early and often. They have balance in the lineup and while they have not been killing opposing pitching they will put it together in this game. They have enjoyed success against the White Sox at home in the last several games and look for that to continue. At home, the Riyals’ lineup will be the difference-maker in winning this series finale and avoiding the sweep.
Prediction: PICK Royals
Full-Game Total Pick
Game 1 was one of the few games in the last several between these teams where the total went Under. I look for a rather high scoring game in this one and the main reason is I think Chase will have a second straight bad outing. The Royals’ lineup will be solid in this game and while the White Sox will not win they will cross the plate a few times. In this division game the Over is the solid pick.
Prediction: PICK Over
