The Colorado Rockies will conclude a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Coors Field on Sunday. The Padres won the first game of the series 8-7. The Rockies led 5-4 entering the top ninth inning on Friday night and were just one out away from victory before Fernando Tatis Jr. homered for the Padres to tie the game at 5-5. Trent Grishman and Manny Machado then drew walks before Tommy Pham blasted a three-run home run that would be the eventual game-winner for San Diego. All four runs were scored off of Rockies closer Wade Davis who now has a 16.88 ERA on the season. Colorado would add two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but fell short of tying the game.

Zach Davies, who was 10-7 with a 3.55 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 2019 with the Milwaukee Brewers, is the listed starter for the Padres on Sunday. Antonio Senztalela will take the mound for the Rockies. Senztaela was 11-11 with a 6.71 ERA and 1.75 WHIP in 2019. This prediction was written before the Padres and Rockies played the second game of the series on Saturday night and includes stats through Friday.

Could the Padres be the best in the west?

The Padres are pleased to be in first place with an MLB best 6-2 record through the first eight games of the season. Last season, the Padres finished last in the NL West with a 70-92 record. Although San Diego did not make any big free-agent splashes in the offseason, they have a nice young core of talent that was expected to be improved this season.

The Padres have scored a league-best 52 runs through eight games. Fernando Tatis Jr. is batting .313 on the season, with two homers and a team-high nine RBI. Tatis hit .317 average last season with 22 home runs, 53 RBI, and 16 stolen base in just 84 games before his season was cut short due to injury.

Eric Hosmer has seven RBI in only three games played this season and is currently listed as day-to-day with a non-COVID-19 related illness. Hosmer hit 22 diggers and led the team with 99 RBI last season.

Trent Grishman (2 HR 5 RBI), Tommy Phan (1 HR 7 RBI), Will Myers (2 HR 5 RBI), and Manny Machado (2 HR 5 RBI) round out the meat of the Padres' order. Machado was second on the team with 32 home runs and 85 RBI in 2019.

As a pitching staff, the Padres 3.43 earned run average currently ranks eight amongst all MLB teams. San Diego plans to turn the ball over to Zach Davies on Sunday. Davies picked up the win in his only start this season on July 28, when he allowed three runs (two earned), over five innings in the Padres 5-3 victory against the San Fransico Giants.

Since breaking into the big leagues, Zach Davies has only made one career start at Coors Field, which came on his final start of the 2019 season. Davies pitched well at Coors, allowing just two hits and one earned run over five innings of work; however, the Brewers still ended up losing that game 11-7 on Sept. 27, 2019. Davies is 2-1 lifetime with a 3.48 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in four career starts against the Rockies.

Rockies hope pitching success can continue at Coors

The Colorado Rockies finished the 2019 season with a 71-91 record, only one game better than the San Diego Padres. The Rockies are 4-2 after having there four-game winning streak snapped on Friday night. Rockies shortstop Trevor Story is off to a great start, batting .348 with three home runs and four RBI through just the first six games. Trevor Story hit .294 with 35 homers and 85 RBI last season. Charlie Blackmon, now in his 10th season with the Rockies, is batting .308 with one home run and four RBI. Last season Blackmon batted .314 with 32 home runs and 86 RBI. Nolan Arenado batted .315 with 41 home runs and 118 RBI in 2019, giving him at least 37 homers in five consecutive seasons. This year Arenado is batting .261 with on RBI thus far.

The Rockies pitching staff has a 2.72 ERA, fourth-best in baseball on this young season. Antonio Senzatela has contributed to the early season success, the 25-year old right-hander picked up the win in Colorado's 8-3 win at Oakland on Tuesday, throwing five innings, allowing six hits and three walks, but only two earned runs. 2019 was a rough year for Senzatela, who carried a 7-4 record and 6.21 ERA at Coors Field, with an 11-11 record and 6.71 ERA overall.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

When looking at both teams, I see this as a pretty even match-up that can go either way with Davies facing Senzatela. With Colorado hosting this game at Coors Field and also being the underdog, I think the better value here is to take the Rockies, instead of laying juice on the Padres.

Prediction: Colorado Rockies ML +118

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Antonio Sentzalea has a track record of pitching well against the Padres. He is 6-1 with a 3.30 ERA, and 1.17 WHIP in 12 career games and six career starts against them, including a 2-0 record, 2.70 ERA and 0.98 WHIP against the Padres last season.

Zach Davies was 1-0 with a 0.87 ERA in two starts against the Rockies last season.

Both teams have gotten good pitching so far this season, but of course, there's always the risk of a late-innings bullpen implosion, especially at Coors Field, similar to the six-run 9th inning these teams combined to put up on Friday night. Still, I will take the under here.

Prediction: Under 13

Full-Game Prop Bet
Rating:

I like the under for this game due to the starting pitching match-up. Since I am taking the under for the entire game, I certainly like the under for the first five innings, especially before either bullpen gets involved.

Davies pitched well at Coors Field last season and Sentzalea has been consistently good when facing the Padres.

Prediction: Under First 5 innings
