Milwaukee Brewers vs. St. Louis Cardinals
MLB: Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at 7:45 PM EST
The Brewers have really cooled down after a five-game win streak and in a recent two-game stretch they gave up 30 runs and actually won one of those games! Yeah, the pitching was not great in that stretch, was before that and was the main reason for the win streak. This is a big series for the Brew Crew and the Cardinals, as they and the Chicago Cubs are in a dogfight for the NL Central crown.
To say the Cardinals have been streaky as of late would be an understatement. Lose five straight then win five straight and then go 2-2 in a four-game stretch where they scored 18 runs in the wins and only two in the losses. Consistency has not been their forte in the last few weeks.
Been a while
Hard to believe that these division rivals have not met since the latter part of April. Is Milwaukee a club that has a good memory? If they do, they don’t have fond memories playing the Red Birds, as they have lost their last four games facing them and were swept by them in the last series in St. Louis. The team has lost two of three and four of six games recently and they come into this series in 2nd place in the NL Central two games back of the Cardinals and Cubs. In scoring 30 runs in the last two games of the last series, they beat the Nationals 15-14 and then gave up eight HR in a 16-8 loss in the series finale. Needless to say, it helps their playoff chances if their pitching improves. Milwaukee has the bats, hello reigning MVP Christian Yelch who leads the NL in HR and Mike Moustakas who has gone yard three times and has eight RBI in a recent two-game stretch, but pitching helps a tad.
Gio Gonzalez gets the nod in this game for the Brew Crew making his 6th start since missing two months with an injury. He sports a 1-2 record with an ERA of 3.81 that rose after a less than stellar last outing where he gave up five runs in only three 2/3rd innings, but the lineup had his back in a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins. Since coming back the Brewers have won four of his last five starts, including his last two.
Back on top
St. Louis comes into this series after winning seven of nine games. They split their last series where their lineup was legit in the two wins and a no-show in the two losses. However, they won the series finale beating the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 where Paul Goldschmidt went yard and he has gone deep in two of his last three games.

The Cardinals come into this series winning their last four home games while the Brewers have lost six of their last seven road games facing a team with a winning record.
Michael Wacha goes for St. Louis in this Game 2 and the Cardinals have lost his last three starts even though he gave up two of fewer runs in two of them. His first and 4th start of the season came facing the Brewers where St. Louis is 1-1 and he lasted 12 innings and only gave up three runs. The Cardinals have won 10 of Wacha’s last 14 home starts, but his 6-6 record and 5.81 ERA are nothing to write home about.
The St. Louis Cardinals are:
- 4-0 in their last 4 home games
- 7-2 in their last 9 overall
- 16-5 in their last 21 vs. National League Central
The Milwaukee Brewers are:
- 2-10 in their last 12 Tuesday games
- 1-6 in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning record
- 1-6 in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning home record
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Ok, so the Cardinals have played pretty weak schedule as of late and have lost their last five games facing a team with a winning record. Still, they come into this series with a four-game win streak agaist the Brewers and Gonzalez was not sharp in his last outing. He will not be sharp in this one either while Wacha will be decent and the Cards will take this big division game.
Prediction: PICK: Cardinals
Full-Game Total Pick
The Brewers have lit it up in a recent two game stretch scoring 30 runs, but while they will get a few runs in this game they will not reach double digits. Still, with Gonzalez struggling for his 2nd straight start this game will be far from a pitcher’s duel and that means the Over is the money pick.
Prediction: PICK: Over
