Chicago White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins
MLB: Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at 1:10 PM EST
The White Sox are well under .500 and out of the playoff picture, but they did take the first game of this series. While the club only ranks 28th in the Majors in runs scored their lineup has been pretty solid as of late scoring at least five runs in a recent stretch of five of six games.
Before losing Game 1 of this series the Twins swept the Texas Rangers on the road in a four-game set where they totaled 35 runs. They are battling it out with the Cleveland Indians for the AL Central crown and while they lost the first game of this series at home, they have the best home record in MLB.
Big gun helps take Game 1
In the first game of this series the Sox beat the Twins 6-4 behind a three-run home run from Jose Abreu, who leads the club in home runs and RBI.

He is batting nearly .330 in the month of August and while he has 92 RBI on the season no other player on the club has more than 59. While Chicago is 11 games under .500 on the road this season, they have won five of their last six games facing teams from the AL Central.
The White Sox send Lucas Giolito to the hill in this game and he has been their best starter this season leading the club in wins (13), ERA (3.41), and strikeouts (182). Chicago has won two of his last three starts and in his last two starts he gave up two runs in each. After a great start against the Twins in his first start facing them on June 30th at home, he had his worst start of the season against them, at home again, on July 25th giving up seven runs in five innings in a Sox loss. Chicago has won nine of Giolito’s last 12 road starts.
In the first game of this series, the Twins had their four-game win streak snapped. They are two games up on the Indians in the AL Central and they can get a heads up on the Tribe, as after this series in their next three they face the Sox again and the Detroit Tigers, who have the worst record in the Majors, twice. In the first game of this series, the Twins had 15 hits, but only scored four runs. The club ranks 3rd in MLB in runs scored and Jorge Polanco has three multi-hit games in a row where he is batting .500 (7 for 14) with a home run and five RBI. Slugger Nelson Cruz (32 home runs) is back after missing several games with an injury. Minnesota went yard once in the Game 1 loss and they are pace to break the Major League record for home runs in a season.
The Twins send out Jake Odorizzi in this game and the club has won his last four starts. He gave up three runs in his last outing and was lights out in his previous three only giving up two runs in 17 2/3 innings of work. Odorizzi has only faced the White Sox once this season on May 26th at home where he pitched five 1/3 scoreless innings only allowing one hit in a 7-0 Minnesota win. The Twins have won 20 of his last 27 starts and have won 16 of his last 21 home starts.
The Minnesota Twins are:
- 4-1 in their last 5 overall
- 42-17 in their last 59 vs. a team with a losing record
- 38-18 in their last 56 vs. American League Central
The Chicago White Sox are:
- 7-19 in their last 26 road games vs. a right-handed starter
- 3-9 in their last 12 during game 3 of a series
- 6-20 in their last 26 games vs. a right-handed starter
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Twins have not played well at home in their last several games there and lost the first game of this series. That and with Giolito on the hill is why I am not taking the Twins and the run-line. Minnesota will win this game with Odorizzi on the mound, as he has been solid for the whole season and was stellar in his last outing facing the White Sox. Both hurlers will have good starts in this division encounter, but the Twins will win a low scoring affair to keep the pressure on the Indians.
Prediction: PICK: Twins
Full-Game Total Pick
While Giolito did not have a good outing in his last start facing the Twins he will have a good outing in this one. Odorizzi will as well and runs will be at a premium in this game, which will be a pitcher’s duel. The total for Game 1 of this series was a PICK with the total set at 10 runs and for this game the winning pick is the Under.
Prediction: PICK: Under
