Cleveland Indians vs. New York Mets Predictions, Preview, and Odds – 8-21-2019
On Wednesday night, the Cleveland Indians and New York Mets will do battle in this Interleague matchup. First pitch is set for 7:10 PM ET, with Adam Plutko on the mound for Cleveland and Marcus Stroman going for New York.
Television-wise, the matchup will be broadcast on STOh for Cleveland and SNY for New York.
Tribe Ready To Play
The Cleveland Indians are one of the teams to envy in baseball for this time of year. The tribe are in the first wild card spot and can still win the AL Central division. Either way, there’s a good chance the Indians will play in October. The Indians are 5-5 in their last ten games and were able to split a four-game series with the AL-best New York Yankees. Even though Cleveland played average baseball in the last ten games, they are 10 games over .500 on the road and want to continue to try and catch the Minnesota Twins.
Adam Plutko has pitched okay for the most part. He has two quality starts in his last six outings. The Indians are 4-2 in his last six starts. Lately, he has given up 3-4 runs and pitches for about 5-6 innings. Also, he will give up a home run or two.
The Indians have been able to go on a winning run because of their pitching. Cleveland pitching has an AL-best 3.35 ERA. The bullpen has a 3.58 ERA, which is second in the AL. Pitching will be key against a New York team, that have a few great pitchers of their own. With the offense, watch out for Jose Ramirez, he has 15 extra base hits in August, and that is the most in the majors. That will help set the table for some runs.

In heartwarming news for the Indians, on Monday Carlos Carrasco made his first rehab start since being diagnosed with leukemia. He hasn’t pitched since May 30th and the fans gave him a standing ovation.
Mets Will Use Home Field To Their Advantage Against Upcoming Tough Teams
The New York Mets are trying to break through the cluster that is the NL wild-card race. They are just two games back of the Chicago Cubs for the second wild-card spot, but the Philadelphia Phillies are also, two games back, and the Milwaukee Brewers are two and a half back. The Mets are right there for a playoff spot, but it’s about to turn tough. New York’s next 18 games are against teams that are above .500 and the team is 34-47 against teams above .500. However, at least most of these games are at home, where the Mets are 34-21.
So far, Marcus Stroman hasn’t pitched that great for his new team. Before he was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Mets, Stroman had a stretch of six quality starts in seven outings. Now in his three starts with the Mets, he averaged around 5 innings, walked around 2-4 hitters, gave up 4-9 hits, and gave up a few home runs. The bright side is that the Mets are 3-0 in his starts.
The hitters that may stand out in this game are Michael Conforto and Wilson Ramos. Since the All-Star break, Conforto is batting .291, with 29 RBI’s, and an incredible OPS of .936. Since August 2nd, Ramos has a 13-game hitting streak going and is batting .423. The bullpen will be key in keeping this game close, especially if things get out of hand early.
With the Mets having an unbelievable season, Pete Alonso had this to say on Sunday: Going forward, Alonso said that he wants “to keep playing the way that I’ve been playing. Just trying to help this team win. This season’s been unbelievable, it’s been a dream come true so far, so I just want to keep building off of it and keep trying to help this team win.
New York is:
- Mets are 5-11 in their last 16 Wednesday games.
- Mets 34-47 against above .500 teams.
- Indians are 8-2 in Plutko’s last 10 starts.
- Indians are 7-1 in their last 8 interleague road games.
- Indians are 11-3 in their last 14 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Two of the hottest teams since the All-Star break will be going at it. Both these pitchers give up 3-4 to runs a game and the teams have still been successful, for their starters.
Every game starts to matter a little more as we approach September. Both these teams need to get a little win streak going to help their playoff positioning. Should be an interesting game considering the Indians just played well against the Yankees, while the Mets are 12-5 against the AL.
Prediction: Cleveland Indians +139
Full-Game Total Pick
Both lineups have one or two guys who can hit the ball out at anytime. These starters give up a lot of hits and usually a few homeruns. These teams will go back and forth with driving in runs.
Lately, the Mets have been in somewhat close games, with a decent amount of runs scored. Indians easily got the bats rolling against the Yankees. Indians win 7-6.
Prediction: Over 9
