We have an American League MLB contest to consider for Wednesday evening when the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers meet for game two of their three-game scheduled series. This preview was published before the start of game one of this series and all opinions are based on the stats from Monday night MLB action.
The Yankees are first in the American League East and veteran lefty CC Sabathia is the New York probable starter against the Tigers. Detroit is last in the American League Central and southpaw Matt Boyd is the Tigers probable starter against the Yankees on Wednesday evening.
Yankees Looking Forward to Clinching AL East
New York is right where they want to be in the American League East standings; they have a nine-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays and should be clinching the division in short order. The Yankees have won seven of their last 10 and enter their series with the Tigers riding a three-game winning streak and a series win over the Boston Red Sox. New York has outscored its opponents by 174 runs and has a 42-28 record this season away from Yankee Stadium.

Sabathia (5-8, 4.93) is set to return Wednesday from the 10-day IL with a 1.40 WHIP and his 4.91 xFIP indicates that maybe what we see with the 39-year old lefty is what we get. Sabathia has allowed 18 earned runs over the last 18.1 innings pitched and strikes out 8.61 batters per nine innings while allowing 3.23 walks and 2.42 home runs allowed per nine innings pitched.
Detroit has scored 18 runs over their last five games and scores an average of 3.97 runs per game with an American League worst 53 bombs at Comerica Park and has smashed an American League worst 27 bombs against left-handed pitching this season.
Tigers Worst Home Record in MLB
The 2019 Detroit Tigers have the least number of wins in MLB this season and this rebuild looks uglier by the day. The Tigers have lost seven of their last 10 and enter their series with New York hoping to end a two-game losing streak. The Tigers -283-run differential is an MLB worst and Detroit has won the least amount of home games in MLB this season. The only bright spot on this team is pitching Wednesday night.

Boyd (8-10, 4.57) has a 1.19 WHIP and his 3.71 xFIP suggests besides pitching for Detroit, Boyd has been unlucky and could see some positive regression at some point this season. Boyd has allowed 22 earned runs over the last 30.2 innings pitched and strikes out 11.82 hitters per nine with 2.26 walks and 1.89 home runs allowed this season per nine innings pitched.
New York has scored 25 runs over their last five games and scores an average of 6.2 runs per game with 139 bombs away from Yankee Stadium and has smashed 71 dingers against southpaws this season.
- Tigers are 1-5 in Boyd’s last 6 home starts vs. a team with a winning record.
- Tigers are 1-11 in Boyd’s last 12 starts vs. a team with a winning record.
- Tigers are 0-5 in Boyd’s last 5 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.
- Yankees are 6-1 in Sabathia’s last 7 starts vs. a team with a losing record.
- Yankees are 4-1 in Sabathia’s last 5 Wednesday starts.
- Yankees are 4-1 in Sabathia’s last 5 road starts vs. a team with a losing record.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
It’s hard to support the Tigers and even if the other team was disqualified, Detroit would find a way to lose. Especially at Comerica Park. Detroit plays awful baseball and there isn’t a nice way to put this so I will just say it…..the 2019 Detroit Tigers are an awful baseball team.
Sabathia hasn’t been very good this season but even he should coast through the anemic lineup of the Tigers.
Boyd is going to be some kind of pitcher but he’s getting tired of having to be perfect every time he steps on the bump. Boyd could rack up some strikeouts on Wednesday night but other than that, this is going to be a tough one for Detroit to win.
I’m going with the Yankees on the run line Wednesday.
Prediction: Yankees -1.5
Full-Game Total Pick
I don’t think the Yankees are going to score many runs at all against Boyd on Wednesday. He strikes out plenty and the Yankees strike out a bunch so there is that and as bad as Sabathia can be, and he has been awful at times, the Tigers likely won’t score more than two or three runs because that’s what the 2019 Detroit Tigers do or don’t do.
I’ll roll with the UNDER on Wednesday night.
