New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers
Where and when: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan, Thursday, 1:10 pm EST
In what may likely be a rain-soaked afternoon in Detroit, Michigan, the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers will conclude their three-game set at Comerica Park at 1:10 pm EST. Detroit drew first blood in this matchup on Tuesday night in picking up a 12-11 victory, despite the Yankees have multiple homers during the contest.
Jeimer Candelario proved valuable at the plate in going 3-5 on the night while bringing in three runs. On the other hand, the Tigers obtained a total of sixteen hits as a team with Christian Stewart, Miguel Cabrera, along with Grayson Greiner also having two RBI’s apiece. In all, Detroit was able to overcome a disastrous start by Edwin Jackson, who gave up six earned runs along with two home runs in just two innings of work, to tie the game at six in the third.
The team tacked on their final run in the ninth as the Tigers tied their season series versus New York in 2019 (2-2).
However, the Yankees continue to possess a healthy amount of momentum in winning seven of their last ten games, overall. And while their defeat in the opener to the Tigers halted a three-game winning streak, New York had a total of eleven hits with Brett Gardner hitting his 23rd homer on a 2-5, 3 RBI night. Furthermore, Edwin Encarnacion along with red-hot Gleyber Torres hit their 33rd and 36th homer, respectively, while bringing in three runs combined in the loss.
Finally, Jonathan Loaisiga along with Adam Ottavino were each credited with blown saves for New York while Nestor Cortez, Jr. gave up two runs on six hits in just over two innings. Important to note that the Yankees are 4-1 in their last five series after being defeated in the opener.
Turnbull desperately in need of a win
It is amazing that Spencer Turnbull (3-14) has not picked up a win since May of this year. However, instead of a loss, the right-hander was able to get the no-decision in his most recent performance on the hill versus the Oakland Athletics on the road. Nonetheless, Turnbull continued to allow too many runs with four in only 1 ⅔ innings of pitching. In all, he has allowed four runs or more in each of his last four starts. And while the Tigers began the season winning five of Turnbull’s first eight starts, the team has only won once in his last thirteen starts.

This will be his first matchup versus this dangerous Yankees lineup. He looks to pick up his first home win of the year, however, the right-hander has given up seventeen earned in his last five starts.
Happ continues to shine on the hill
J.A. Happ seeks his thirteenth win on the season along with his third win in four starts when he takes the mound for New York on Thursday afternoon. Happ has pitched a total of twelve scoreless innings entering this matchup alongside three hits in team wins over the Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox, his most recent start. The Yankees have been solid in picking up wins in seven of Happ’s last ten starts, overall. Furthermore, the veteran has also won two straight road starts to boot.

However, the left-hander has not fared well versus the Tigers’ lineup in recent matchups. While this will be Happ’s first start versus the Tigers this year, he gave up five earned runs along with three home runs at Yankee Stadium last year as Detroit escaped with an 8-7 defeat. Also, he also had a forgettable outing versus Detroit while suiting up for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2018 in surrendering seven earned runs and a homer in five innings in a 9-1 defeat to the Tigers.
Finally, his only start at Comerica Park in the past two years resulted in a 7-4 loss to where Happ gave up another four runs and a home run in five innings.
- DET is 10-43 in their last 53 home games.
- DET is 3-12 in their last 15 Thu. games.
- DET is 17-58 in their last 75 games on grass.
- NYY are 7-2 in their last 9 road games.
- NYY are 9-4 in the last 13 meetings in Detroit.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Happ has not had much success versus Detroit’s lineup in recent starts, however, look for the offense to get the win in this contest as Turnbull continues to be dismal on the hill. With that being said, expect New York to crank up the bats early and often after squandering a 6-0 lead early in the opener on Tuesday. Again, the Yankees have bounced back effectively after series-opening losses, lately.
Prediction: Pick: New York Yankees
Full-Game Total Pick
With Happ struggling versus Detroit combined with Turnbull giving up runs like candy for the past few months, look for both teams to push some runs across the plate. However, with the Yankees being up eight games over the Tampa Bay Rays currently, while looking to claim the best record in the MLB, look for their focus to be where it needs to be in what I strongly feel will be a high-scoring contest.
