This Thursday, there is a matchup between two National League teams. Specifically, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants will face off at about 3:45 PM. This is game four of a four-game series, which will take place at Oracle Park.
Pirates Look To Potentially Get Back To Fourth Place In NL Central
The Pittsburgh Pirates currently have the third-worst record in the National League with nothing to left to play for moving forward. This is extremely upsetting considering the fact that the Pirates were projected to win around 79 games before the season started. Now, the Pirates are expected to win around 70 games which means that they should finish last in the NL Central division. However, the Pirates are only three games back of the Reds for fourth place in the division which could be used as a small consolation prize to help get the team motivated during the last few weeks of the regular season.
The Pirates have lost three of their last six games and they have gone 33-41 away from home this season. Yesterday, the Pirates scored six runs and beat the Giants on the road. Leading their offense was Adam Frazier who had two hits and an RBI. Despite Pittsburgh’s awful season, it has actually been successful against San Francisco this season as it has won four of the six meetings.

Pitching for the Pirates in this game will be Joe Musgrove and he has gone 9-12 with a 4.67 ERA in 29 appearances (28 starts) on the year, including a 5-6 record with a 3.97 ERA in 15 appearances on the road. Righties are hitting .245 off of him this year, while lefties are hitting .272. He has also been below average since the All-Star Break as he has a 3-5 record along with a 5.60 ERA.
The Pirates have been average on offense so far as they come into this game ranked 17th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.77 runs per game, while also recording the 4th-most hits in the league with 9.31 hits per game. On the mound, they have also been below average as they come into this game ranked 24th in the league in ERA at 5.05. The bullpen for the Pirates ranks 22nd in the league with a 4.79 ERA.
Giants Look For Another Home Win Under Bochy
The San Francisco Giants were in the hunt for a National League Wild Card spot a little over a month ago before going into another massive slump which essentially killed their chances of making the playoffs. However, the Giants are now in the final month of Bruce Bochy’s tenure as manager so there are a lot of emotions at play in September. During his reign, the Giants won three World Series trophies with the most recent one coming back in 2014. Now, times are extremely different as San Francisco’s domination in the National League has been over for a long time and this year’s team is just an average baseball team in a best-case scenario.
The Giants have won three of their last six games and they are 13-17 in their last 30 games. Yesterday, they scored just three runs and lost to the Pirates at home. Leading their attack was Jaylin Davis who had an RBI single in the fifth inning. This loss was not surprising for the Giants as they have gone just 31-40 at home this season.

Pitching for the Giants in this game will be Jeff Samardzija and he has gone 10-11 with a 3.64 ERA in 29 starts on the year, including a 3-7 record with a 3.66 ERA in 14 appearances at home. Righties are hitting .207 off of him this year, while lefties are hitting .242. However, he has been solid since the All-Star Break as he has a 4-4 record and a 3.08 ERA.
The Giants have been below average on offense so far as they come into this game ranked 26th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.30 runs per game, while also ranking 27th in the league with 1.08 home runs per game. On the mound, they have been much better as they come in ranked 15th in the league in ERA at 4.43. In addition, the bullpen for the Giants ranks 6th in the league with a 3.91 ERA.
- Home team is 4-0 in Estabrook’s last 4 games behind home plate vs. San Francisco.
- Home team is 13-5 in Estabrook’s last 18 games behind home plate.
- Pirates are 1-5 in their last 6 during game 4 of a series.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Even though both teams have nothing to play for solely based on their records, the Giants are still in the middle of Bruce Bochy’s last season as manager which is slowly coming to an end. As a result, I think that San Francisco has an emotional edge in this game in terms of motivation as each game at Oracle Park signifies one of the last times Bochy will get to manage this team in front of its home fans. Plus, Musgrove is coming off of an injury so one cannot really trust him in his first start back. Therefore, give me the home team.
Prediction: San Francisco Giants
Full-Game Total Pick
Simply put, I do not trust either pitcher in this game and have to lean to the over. Musgrove has a 5.60 ERA since the All-Star Break and is coming off of an injury while Samardzija has a 5.51 ERA over the last 15 days so I expect both pitchers to struggle in this one. As a result, I expect this game to finish somewhere in the realm of 6-5 so I have to lean to the over.
