Houston Astros (87-57) at Los Angeles Angels (73-71)

MLB: Wednesday, September 13 10:07 PM EST at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California

The Line: Houston Astros -133

Total: 8.5

The Los Angeles Angels look for a quick response to their series-opening loss to the Houston Astros in game 2 from the Angel Stadium on Wednesday night. Tyler Skaggs is expected to start for the Angels and Lance McCullers Jr. for the Astros.

Astros clinical in low-scorer against Angels

The Houston Astros have the anomaly on their season CV of being swept by the Oakland Athletics over four games. It’s what you’d expect from sport, but it’s not really what you’d expect from sport, especially over the course of a series.

The Astros bounced back well though, beating the Los Angeles Angels 1-0 in game 1. Justin Verlander struck out nine in another stellar performance.

“It feels good,” Verlander said. “On a night when we really needed it after a tough series and an off day to reset, those are the kind of things that make you feel really good. I got in a rhythm, was able to have a couple of quick innings and just go from there.”

Angels can’t score against Astros

It’s not a great time for the Los Angeles Angels to be plagued by inconsistency. They have endured four losses in their last five games, falling to 73-71 for the season. Garrett Richards allowed one run on three singles in his return from a five-month layoff to injury.

“He spent the pitches that he was allotted,” manager Mike Scioscia said. “We were thrilled he could get us through five innings.”

The Angels pitching is knocking on the door of the top 10 in the MLB. They have an ERA of 4.23 (11th), with a WHIP of 1.30 (10th) and a BAA of .253 (11th in the league).

MLB trends:

Houston Astros are:

  • 4-0 in their last 4 after allowing 2 runs or less in their previous game.
  • 6-1 in their last 7 games following a win.
  • 5-1 in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
  • 4-1 in their last 5 vs. a team with a winning record.

Los Angeles Angels are:

  • 1-4 in their last 5 vs. American League West.
  • 1-4 in their last 5 overall.
  • 1-4 in their last 5 games on grass.

The Astros, on paper, are far too strong for the Angels. The Astros are the best batting team in the country, and the Angels have continually struggled with the bat through the season.
