Written by: George Middleton
Atlanta Braves (64-78) at Washington Nationals (88-55)
MLB: Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at 7:05 p.m. ET
Line: Washington -335
The Atlanta Braves hit the road to take on the Washington Nationals for a Wednesday night contest. Washington has won six of their last seven games, and Atlanta has won four of their last five. The Nationals will go with superstar pitcher Max Scherzer who is 14-5 with a 2.32 ERA on the season. Atlanta will go with Luiz Gohara who will be making his second start of the season. The Nationals are three games in the loss column behind the Dodgers for the best record in the NL. Can Gohara lead the Braves to the big road upset?
Braves top Marlins in extra innings
The Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 10-8 in 11 innings. Atlanta went into the ninth inning trailing by three before storming back. Lane Adams hit a walkoff two-run homer in the 11th. R.A. Dickey got the no-decision after allowing five runs in five innings. The Braves did a good job in tagging Odrisamer Despaigne who allowed five runs in 3.2 innings. Tyler Flowers had three singles and three RBI’s. Johan Camargo wound up with two hits and two RBI’s. Atlanta has scored at least five runs in five of their last six games.
Starting pitcher: Luiz Gohara (0-1, 13.50 ERA)
Luis Gohara will be making his second career start for the Nationals. Gohara allowed six runs on four hits in four innings against Texas. He did strikeout six but walked four.
Nationals top Phillies
On Sunday afternoon, the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2. Philadelphia nearly came back from a 3-0 deficit in the ninth inning. The Phillies scored two runs before Rhys Hoskins grounded out to end the game with a runner on first. Stephen Strasburg picked up the win after going eight scoreless innings allowing two hits. The righty improved to 13-4 while lowering his ERA to 2.64. Trea Turner had a triple and a homer in the game. Wilmer Difo wound up with a single and a double in the win. Daniel Murphy, Anthony Rendon, Michael Taylor, and Ryan Zimmerman all rested.
Starting pitcher: Max Scherzer (14-5, 2.32 ERA)
Max Scherzer has been lights out all season for the Nationals. Scherzer is 14-5 with a 2.32 ERA on the year. The veteran righty is looking to bounce back from one of his worst outings in which he allowed four runs in six innings.
The Atlanta Braves are:
- 2-5 in their last 7 during game 2 of a series.
- 15-38 in the last 53 meetings.
The Washington Nationals are:
- 5-0 in their last 5 during game 2 of a series.
- 96-45 in their last 141 Wednesday games.
- 55-27 in their last 82 vs. National League East.
Washington is not only the better offense but they have a huge matchup edge with Scherzer. Look for Scherzer to dominate in an easy Nationals win. Washington will win by at least a pair of runs.
The pick: Washington
