San Diego Padres (65-80) at Minnesota Twins (75-69)
MLB: Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at 8:10 p.m. ET
Line: Minnesota -150
The San Diego Padres hit the road to take on the Minnesota Twins for a Wednesday night contest. On the mound for the Padres is Dinelson Lamet who is 7-7 with a 4.32 ERA on the season. Minnesota’s ace Ervin Santana will take the hill with a 15-7 record and a 3.45 ERA. The Twins are second in the AL Wild Card as they are two games ahead of the Angels. San Diego has lost five of their last eight games, and Minnesota has won four of six since snapping a three-game losing streak. Can Lamet lead the Padres to a rare road victory?
Padres offense struggling lately
The San Diego Padres have been a decent pitching team all season. San Diego is 16th in the league in ERA (4.47) and 15th in quality starts (62). The problem has been their hitting. The team ranks 30th in the league in runs and 30th in average (.234). Jose Pirela leads the Padres with a .288 average to go along with 10 homers in 88 games. Manuel Margot is hitting .268 with 13 homers on the season. Will Myers has been the lone power threat with 27 homers and 70 RBI’s. The problem is that he is batting .244 with 163 strikeouts. Yangervis Solarte has been solid with 16 homers and 58 RBI’s in 112 games. This team doesn’t have a lot of talent on offense. That’s why it’s important for their young arms like Lamet, Jhoulys Chacin, and Luis Pedromo to pan out.
Starting pitcher: Dinelson Lamet (7-7, 4.32 ERA)
Dinelson Lamet has potential to be a solid pitcher. Lamet has pitched good as of late having allowed four runs over his last three outings (18 IP). The 25-year-old has an impressive .203 batting average against.
Twins shutout Padres
The Minnesota Twins beat the San Diego Padres 16-0 on Tuesday night. Kyle Gibson continued his stellar pitching as he went six scoreless innings. Gibson has allowed five runs in his last five outings (32.2 innings). The Twins hit seven homers and had 18 hits in the contest. Minnesota set a Target Field record with the seven homers. Jason Castro had two homers and four RBI’s in the win. Brian Dozier was a double short of the cycle. Eddie Rosario added his 22nd homer of the season. The Twins tagged Travis Wood for nine runs on nine hits in 2.1 innings. Minnesota set a record by homering in each of the first seven innings.
Starting pitcher: Ervin Santana (15-7, 3.45 ERA)
The Twins will go with Ervin Santana who is 15-7 with a 3.45 ERA. Santana has struggled as of late having given up eight runs in 11.2 innings over his last two outings. Look for Santana to bounce back as he has whenever there has been a bump on the road for him.
The San Diego Padres are:
- 3-9 in their last 12 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
- 2-7 in their last 9 interleague games vs. a team with a winning record.
- 1-7 in their last 8 interleague road games.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are:
- 4-1 in their last 5 interleague games vs. a team with a losing record.
- 13-3 under in last 16 on grass.
San Diego has gotten some terrific play from Lamet but the Padres don’t have the offense to match the Twins. Look for Santana to have a solid outing in a narrow Twins win.
