Written by: George Middleton
Dallas Mavericks (11-26) at Minnesota Timberwolves (11-26)
NBA: Monday, January 9, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. ET
Line: Minnesota -5
The Dallas Mavericks hit the road to take on the Minnesota Timberwolves for a Monday night contest. This is the first of three matchups between the teams this season. Minnesota has won four straight games and Dallas has lost three of their last four. Dallas is led by Harrison Barnes who is averaging 20.6 points and 5.5 rebounds this season. The Timberwolves have an incredible young trio in Karl-Anthony Towns (21.4 ppg), Andrew Wiggins (22.1 ppg), and Zach LaVine (20.8 ppg). Both teams have had their struggles on offense. Minnesota is 19th in offense (103.1 ppg) and Dallas is 30th in scoring (95.1 ppg). Can Barnes lead the Mavericks to a road win?
Mavericks offense struggles in loss to Hawks
The Dallas Mavericks lost 97-82 to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night. Atlanta outscored Dallas 52-40 in the second half. Harrison Barnes led the Mavericks with 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Dirk Nowitzki had 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting. Atlanta shot 41 percent from the field and Dallas shot 39 percent. The Hawks out-rebounded the Mavericks 47-41 in the contest. The Mavericks had trouble containing Tim Hardaway Jr. who had 22 points on 5-of-8 from 3-point range.
Devin Harris added 11 points off the bench. Deron Williams and Wesley Matthews struggled going 3-of-12 from the field apiece. Dallas committed 14 turnovers in the game and Atlanta had 10. The Mavericks fell to 7-11 at home this season.
Timberwolves fall to Jazz
The Minnesota Timberwolves lost 94-92 to the Utah Jazz on Saturday night. Minnesota nearly came back after trailing by 15 going into the fourth. Zach LaVine led the Timberwolves with 24 points and nine rebounds. Towns had 18 points and 15 rebounds in the loss. Minnesota shot 44 percent from the field and Utah shot 42 percent. The Timberwolves out-rebounded the Jazz 48-39 in the contest. Wiggins wound up with 16 points but he only shot 6-of-19 from the field.
The key in the contest was turnovers as Minnesota had 16 and Utah committed 10. Ricky Rubio finished with 12 points and seven assists. Gorgui Dieng added 11 points and eight rebounds. The Timberwolves fell to 6-13 at home this season.
The Dallas Mavericks are:
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.
- 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up loss.
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up loss of more than 10 points.
- 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are:
- 16-35-1 ATS in their last 52 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
- 17-40-1 ATS in their last 58 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
Minnesota has a lot more talent than Dallas but that hasn’t equated to success. Towns and LaVine should play well in this one. The Timberwolves should win but look for Barnes to keep Dallas close.
The pick: Dallas
