Detroit Pistons vs. Washington Wizards

NBA: Monday, January 20, Capital One Arena, Washington, D.C. 8:30 PM ET

The Detroit Pistons responded to a three-game losing streak with a pair of road victories over the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks. The Pistons now improved to a 16-27 record and are in the 9th position in the Eastern Conference.

The Washington Wizards suffered four defeats in the previous five games, including the last three, two of which came on the road to the Chicago Bulls and Toronto Raptors. Washington dropped to a 13-28 record and is in the 12th place in the East.

These conference rivals already met three times this season, and the Wizards lead the season series 2-1. Washington won each of the previous ten H2H duels at Capital One Arena.

The Pistons scored season-high 136 points in a win over the Hawks

Detroit displayed the best offensive performance of the season in a massive 136-103 road victory over the Atlanta Hawks. The Pistons were fantastic from the field (59.3%) and excellent from beyond the arc (46.9%), so the hosts didn’t have the slightest chance to avoid a defeat here. The visitors recorded 31 assists opposite Atlanta’s 18 and won the rebounding battle (41-32) as well. Derrick Rose led the Pistons with 27 points and game-high nine assists. Svi Mykhailiuk followed him with career-high 25 points, Markieff Morris scored 22, while Andre Drummond posted a double-double of 16 points and game-high 17 rebounds, along with game-high five steals. The Pistons are playing well, considering they are without three starters. Blake Griffin (knee), Reggie Jackson (back), and Luke Kennard (knee) are out indefinitely.

“I feel like they were being cautious,” Rose said. “I keep showing them. I’m coming in, doing what I’m supposed to do, taking care of my body. I’ve been prepping for this all summer, so it’s finally just coming full circle.”

This season, the Pistons have the 21st offense in the NBA that averages 109.1 points per game, and they are facing the Wizards’ worst defense that allows 120.2 points per contest. The Pistons are the worst in rebounds with 42.2 and 13th in assists with 24.6 per game.

The Wizards’ defense was non-existent in a loss to the Raptors

Washington continued with disastrous defensive displays this season in a 140-111 road defeat to the Toronto Raptors. The Wizards weren’t bad on offense but couldn’t stop the Raptors to destroy them from the field (57.1%), while the visitors committed even 28 turnovers opposite Toronto’s 19. Also, the Raptors had 16 assists more than the Wizards (35-16). Troy Brown led Washington with 22 points, eight rebounds, and team-high three steals. Isaac Bonga recorded a double-double of 17 points and game-high ten boards, Bradley Beal scored 14, while Ish Smith chipped in with 12 points and game-high eight dishes. John Wall (Achilles) is out for the season, while Moritz Wagner (ankle) and Rui Hachimura (groin) are out indefinitely. Jordan McRae (left ankle) is not listed on the injury report for Monday’s game against the Pistons after sustaining a minor injury against the Raptors.

“We didn’t play well, we turned the ball over,” Wizards coach Scott Brooks said. “We played against a championship team that was clicking on all cylinders.”

This season, the Wizards have the 5th offense in the NBA that averages 114.5 points per game, and they are facing the Pistons’ 17th defense that allows 105.6 points per contest. The Wizards are the 27th in rebounds with 42.4 and 8th in assists with 25.6 per game.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

Detroit is playing well given that they are weakened and without Griffin, Jackson, and Kennard, but the Pistons record against the Wizards at Capital One Arena is quite concerning. Washington won the last ten H2H duels at home, and even though the Pistons were victorious in four of the previous five road games, I am going with the hosts in this one. Detroit’s defense improved lately, but I am backing Bradley Beal to bounce back from a 14-point display against the Raptors and get back to his usual production. Beal averaged 24.0 points per game vs. the Pistons this season, and I am backing him to score 25+ here. It’s going to be a close game, but the Wizards will take it.

Prediction: Washington Wizards -1 (-110)

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Three of the last four H2H encounters produced more than 232 points, which is set as the total for this meeting. One side scored 130+ points in the previous two H2Hs, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that occurs here as well. Washington’s defense is the worst in the NBA, and there is virtually no chance they can keep Derrick Rose and Detroit to under 100 points here. The Pistons, on the other hand, displayed some fine offensive performances lately and shouldn’t have a problem to go for 115+ on Monday. I expect another high-scoring duel between these rivals, and I am going with Over.

Prediction: Over 233 (-110)
