New Orleans Pelicans vs. Memphis Grizzlies
NBA: Monday, January 21, 2019 at 5:30 PM EST
The Pelicans have lost three of their last four games including their last two where their defensive effort was less than stellar to say the least. They gave up 147 and 128 points in their last two games and with their play in the last couple of weeks they have dropped to four games under .500 on the season. The offense has been there for New Orleans while the defense has ranked 28th in the league in points allowed. The big news for them is that Davis has an injured finger and is expected to miss 1-2 weeks.
The Grizzlies are in a big-time, tailspin losers of five in a row and 11 of their last 12 games. Their D has not been getting it done, which is the main reason for their recent losing ways. For the season, they rank 2nd in the league in points allowed while ranking dead last in ppg.
The Grizzlies have covered the spread in four of their last five games facing the Pelicans.
Can’t get over 2nd period
In their last game, the Pelicans were on the road losing to the Portland Trailblazers 128-112 where they played it close for three quarters, but were outscored by 13 points in the 2nd quarter and could not make a run after. They shot a better FG% (48.8% to 46.6%), but they had five more turnovers and were killed on the glass giving up 18 offensive rebounds while only pulling down seven. Anthony Davis led New Orleans with 27 points with four of five starters for the team going for double figures. Julius Randle was one rebound shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Davis is one of the league leaders in scoring and rebounding and needless to say he will be missed. Jrue Holiday and Randle are both averaging over 20 ppt and have to take up the slack with AD out. Still, can the D do anything against the Grizzlies, who are a low scoring team that is reeling? Big question in this Western Conference matchup.
Not a game to write home about
The Grizzlies were on the road in their last game where it was far from a game to write home about in a 119-90 loss. The Griz were throttled in the 3rd period being outscored 45-14 and for the game they shot 42% from the floor and allowed the Raptors to shoot

The Griz were sloppy with the rock in the game with 26 turnovers and they gave up 38 points off turnovers while only scoring seven. Jaren Jackson Jr. led Memphis with 16 points with three other players going for double figures. The team missed defensive star Marc Gasol, who is also averaging 15 ppg, who missed the last game and may miss this one with a back injury. Mike Conley leads the Grizzlies averaging 19.8 ppg and he only went for 10 points in the bad loss to Toronto in his last game. This season the Grizzlies are 11-10 at home.
The Memphis Grizzlies are:
- 2-8 ATS in their last 10 vs. Western Conference
- 1-7 ATS in their last 8 home games
- 0-5 ATS in their last 5 Monday games
The New Orleans Pelicans are:
- 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games following a straight up loss of more than 10 points
- 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games after allowing more than 125 points in their previous game
- 9-4 ATS in their last 13 Monday games
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Pelicans have been terrible on D in their last two games, but will that hurt that much in this game facing one of the lowest scoring teams in the league? I would say not so much, as the Grizzlies have not only lost 11 of their last 12 games, but they have failed to cover in seven of their last eight home games. New Orleans will not only cover in this one, but win as well sending the Griz to another loss and that is without Davis on the court.
Prediction: PICK: Pelicans
Full-Game Total Pick
Davis is out and Gasol is likely out and even without the two best defensive players not playing the Under is still the pick. Both AD and Gasol can score and without them this will be a more low scoring game. In the last four games between these teams in Memphis the total has gone Under and that trend will continue in this game.
Prediction: PICK; Under
