We have Eastern Conference NBA basketball to discuss for Wednesday night when the New York Knicks visit the Philadelphia 76ers for game one of a four-game season series. The Knicks are off to a slow, 4-10 start to its season and coming off a 123-105 home win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 76ers are 8-5 this season and enter this matchup fresh off a 114-95 road win over the Cavaliers.
Knicks Defeat CavaliersThe Knicks aren’t having the best season under second-year head coach David Fizdale and are off to a 4-10 start. New York doesn’t have injury concerns at all; they aren’t very good. Marcus Morris leads New York with 18.6 points per game, and that tells the entire story right there. Julius Randle leads the Knicks 9.39 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game and has been an excellent addition to the Knicks frontcourt. Rookie R.J. Barrett has an excellent beginning to his career, averaging 15.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game this season.
New York dispatched the visiting Cavaliers Monday night by a score of 123-105. Randle went off for 30 points and seven rebounds to lead the Knicks to its fourth victory of the season. Morris chipped in with 26 points along with six rebounds, and Barrett added 15 points for the winners. The Knicks shot 44.9 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from downtown, and 77.1 percent from the charity stripe against Cleveland.
Philly Fifth in Eastern ConferenceIf the NBA playoffs were to begin today, the 76ers would be the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, and that isn’t where most preseason pundits placed them. Losing back to back road games to the Oklahoma City Thunder and Orlando Magic didn’t help much, nor does Joel Embiid missing games due to “load management” and suspension hasn’t done much for them either. Three of its five losses this season were winnable games, and a win or two more, and the 76ers are at the top of the heap. Embiid leads the squad in scoring, averaging 22.9 points alongside a team-high 11.4 rebounds. Tobias Harris is scoring 17.6 points with 7.9 rebounds and has been strong when Philly is without Embiid in the lineup. Al Horford averages 15 points with 7.1 rebounds along with 4.1 assists per game. Ben Simmons leads Philadephia with 7.1 assists and a team-high 2.3 steals per game for Philly this season.
Harris dropped 27 points along with five rebounds, and Simmons added ten points with 11 assists to lead the 76ers past the Cavaliers this past Sunday by a score of 114-95. Embiid tossed in 14 points, Horford flirted with a triple-double, and the 76ers won a game they were supposed to win. Philly shot 54.8 percent from the field, 39.1 percent from long-range, and 76.5 percent from the free-throw line in their road win against Cleveland.
- 76ers are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games playing on 2 days rest.
- 76ers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Wednesday games.
The top supporting trends for this game found on Covers.com, are:
- Knicks are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
- Knicks are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight-up win.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
This is a winnable game for the 76ers, and they should win this game by any reasonable amount of points Vegas puts forth. They are a better shooting, rebounding, and coached team than New York is. Plus, they are playing at home where the 76ers are undefeated this season. The Knicks aren't very good at all and especially on the road where they are 1-6 thus far. They won't compete in this one. I'm going with the 76ers in this contest.
Full-Game Total Pick
The 76ers are tenth and the Knicks are 20th in defensive efficiency this season. Both are in the bottom half of the NBA and neither team is particularly good at shooting free throws. None of those things is conducive to a high scoring game. This game will be won and lost in the paint and that will cause plenty of free-throw opportunities and these two teams are two of the worst from the charity stripe. I will play UNDER in this game.
