Houston Rockets vs. San Antonio Spurs

NBA: Tuesday, December 3, AT&T Center, San Antonio, Texas, 8:30 PM ET

The Houston Rockets responded to a three-game winning streak with a pair of home victories over the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks. Houston now improved to a 13-6 record and is in the 5th position in the Western Conference.

The San Antonio Spurs are playing the worst basketball in years. They were on an eight-game losing run before defeating the struggling New York Knicks on the road. However, San Antonio lost three of the last four games, including the most recent one to the Detroit Pistons. The Spurs dropped to a 7-14 record and are in the 12th place in the West.

These Southwest Division and in-state rivals met four times in 2018-19, and the Rockets won three of those meetings.

James Harden exploded for 60 points in a blowout win over the Hawks

Houston destroyed the Atlanta Hawks 158-111 on the wings of fantastic James Harden, who scored 60 points in just 31 minutes. The Rockets bagged even 81 points in the opening half and allowed only 52 in return. They maintained a considerable lead without problems and secured a well-deserved win. Harden scored 60 points, along with game-high eight assists and game-high three steals. Ben McLemore posted a double-double of 24 points and game-high 13 rebounds, while Russell Westbrook ended the clash with 15 points, eight boards, and eight dimes. Danuel House Jr. (illness) will miss his second straight game, while Eric Gordon (knee), Nene Hilario (abdomen), and Gerald Green (foot) are out indefinitely. The good news for the Rockets is that Clint Capela will return to the lineup after spending two games on the sidelines due to an illness.

"What he's doing has not been seen," teammate Austin Rivers said about Harden. "My man had 60 and didn't play the fourth quarter. Name another player who could do that right now."

This season, the Rockets have the top offense in the NBA that averages 120.3 points per game, and they are facing the Spurs' 25th defense that allows 115.1 points per contest. The Rockets are 6th in rebounds with 47.3 and 26th in assists with 21.6 per game.

The Spurs disappeared in a massive loss to the Pistons

San Antonio managed to defeat one of the strongest teams in the NBA – the Los Angeles Clippers but suffered a catastrophe on the road against the Detroit Pistons in the following games. The Spurs allowed even 132 points in a 132-98 loss as the Pistons outjumped them 50-31 and made 15 triples opposite San Antonio's seven. DeMar DeRozan led the Spurs with 20 points, Lonnie Walker had 13, while Rudy Gay contributed with 12 points and two blocks. In San Antonio's defense, they played without LaMarcus Aldridge, who missed his first game of the season with right thigh soreness. Aldridge is questionable to face the Rockets on Tuesday.

"Yes, I'm disappointed," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We came out aggressively in our last game against the Clippers and we had energy and execution at both ends. They scored 97 and tonight we gave up 132.

This season, the Spurs have the 14th offense in the NBA that averages 110.9 points per game, and they are facing the Rockets' 23rd defense that allows 114.5 points per contest. The Spurs are 15th in rebounds with 45.3 and 15th in assists with 24.0 per game.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

San Antonio was once known as a great home team that is not losing games in front of their fans easily. Nowadays, that is not the case anymore. The Spurs lost five of the previous six games at AT&T Center, and their poor defense is the main reason they’re struggling at the moment. The hosts are facing the hottest offense in the NBA that has a scoring machine – James Harden. Although the Spurs managed to stop the Los Angeles Clippers in the most recent home game, it’s going to be extremely hard to limit the Beard in this one. Houston has Clint Capela back after the center missed the last two games, and he will provide stability under the rims. The Rockets did lose the previous two on the road, but I am backing them to get a win on Tuesday.

Prediction: Houston Rockets -4 (-110)

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

The Spurs kept the opponents to under 100 points at home just once in 11 games this season when they beat the Clippers. It’s clear that San Antonio cannot rely on its home defense as they used to in the last few years, and Houston shouldn’t have problems to go for 110+ points here. The good sign for the bettors who prefer betting on Over is that Houston failed to limit the opponents to under 100 points only once in nine road games in this campaign. I am backing both teams to hit triple digits and combine for at least 230 points, and that’s why I am going with Over.

Prediction: Over 226.5 (-110)
