Los Angeles Lakers vs. Memphis Grizzlies

NBA: Saturday, February 29, FedExForum, Memphis, Tennessee, 8:00 PM ET

The Los Angeles Lakers have been red-hot recently as they won each of the previous seven games, covering the spread in five of them. Following the most recent win over the 10-point underdogs Golden State Warriors, the Lakers improved to a 45-12 record and are still at the top of the Western Conference.

The Memphis Grizzlies are coming back home from a four-game road trip on which they suffered all four defeats. After the most recent loss to the 12-points favorites Houston Rockets, the Grizzlies dropped to a 28-30 record and are in the 8th place in the West. In the meantime, the Grizzlies suffered a narrow 104-101 home loss to the Sacramento Kings, so they are now standing at a 28-31 record.

These conference rivals already met three times this season, and the Lakers won all three duels, covering the spread in two.

The Lakers destroyed the Warriors without LeBron James

Los Angeles continued with excellent displays even with LeBron James (sore groin) out of the court and defeated the Golden State Warriors 116-86 on the road. The Lakers shut down the hosts in the second half and kept them to only 34 points, scoring 62 in return. The visitors were strong on defense as they forced 27 turnovers and committed 17 on the other end. Anthony Davis led the Lakers with 23 points, six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Kyle Kuzma scored 18 points, Dwight Howard added 13 points, game-high nine boards, and two rejections, while Avery Bradley, Rajon Rondo, and JaVale McGee scored 12 points each. LeBron James will be available to take on the Grizzlies on Saturday.

"LeBron, when he's out, it's taking away a lot of things that we do, so it's on all of us to make sure we kind of fill those voids, and I think we did that tonight," Davis said.

This season, the Lakers have the 7th offense in the NBA that averages 114.8 points per game, and they are facing the Grizzlies' 26th defense that allows 115.3 points per contest. The Lakers are the 6th in rebounds with 46.3 and 6th in assists with 26.2 per game.

The Rockets dismantled the Grizzlies in Houston

Memphis suffered one of the biggest losses of the season as the Houston Rockers destroyed them, 140-112. The Grizzlies shot only under 40.0% from the field and made 13 three-pointers opposite Houston's 23. Dillon Brooks led the Grizzlies with 22 points, Jonas Valanciunas posted a double-double of 16 points and game-high ten rebounds, while JaMorant added 12 points and game-high nine assists. Jaren Jackson (knee) and Brandon Clarke (hip) will miss the next two or three weeks, while Justise Winslow (back) and Grayson Allen (hip) are out indefinitely.

"We are ready to get home and continue to get back to work," Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins said. "This is a great experience for our guys. It's a tough four-game stretch, but there's a lot of games to be played. Just keep our spirits up and keep getting better."

This season, the Grizzlies have the 13th offense in the NBA that averages 112.8 points per game, and they are facing the Lakers' 6th defense that allows 107.0 points per contest. The Grizzlies are the 8th in rebounds with 46.0 and 1st in assists with 27.1 per game.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

The Grizzlies will play the second of back-to-back games as they face the Sacramento Kings on Friday. The game against the Kings is far more critical for the Grizzlies, as they are trying to defend the 8th place in the conference and reach the playoffs. Sacramento is fighting for that spot, and that's why the Grizzlies will be more focused to win that duel. The Kings managed to beat the Grizzlies and closed the gap in the standings. The gGizzlies a lot of energy while the Lakers will be fresh and with LeBron James back into contention. I am backing King James to have another monster display after a 40-point performance in his previous game and lead his team to the victory.

Prediction: Los Angeles Lakers -6.5 (-110)

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

None of three H2H duels this season went Under. I expect to see a strong defensive performance from the Lakers, who will be fresh and ready to limit the Grizzlies. Memphis will definitely be tired late in the game on both ends of the floor, so I predict a lot of missed shots from their part. The Lakers did score more than 115 points in two of three H2Hs, but they scored "only" 109 in the latest duel at FedExForum. I don't think Los Angeles will have offensive troubles in this one, though, but I am more concerned about Memphis' offense, and that's why I am going with Under.

Prediction: Under 228.5 (-110)
