New Orleans Pelicans at Portland Trail Blazers

NBA: Moda Center, Portland, Oregon at 10:30 PM  ET, Tuesday, April 17, 2018

The New Orleans Pelicans have a chance to put this conference quarterfinal match-up out of the reach of the Portland Trail Blazers when they face off in game 2 from the Moda Center on Tuesday night. The Pelicans took game 1 with a tight 97-95 win.

Pelicans begin postseason with scrappy win

The New Orleans Pelicans have often depended on their offense right through the season. But they also showed they can play tough, playoffs basketball. And they came up with a crucial 97-95 win over the Portland Trail Blazers at the Moda Center in game 1.

Anthony Davis scored 35 points to go with 14 rebounds. Jrue Holiday scored 21 points. Rajon Rondo used all his experience to keep the Trail Blazers at bay down the stretch, finishing with 17 assists and eight rebounds.

“He’s in a different mindset,” Davis said of Rondo. “He was up all night watching film. When they were calling plays out there he was telling us what it was in our version before they had a chance to run it. He’s definitely locked in. The way he played tonight with 17 assists, he’s just in a different mode for the playoffs.”

Trail Blazers desperate for game 2

The Portland Trail Blazers put up a spirited fight late in the game, but it wasn’t enough to rally past the Pelicans. Faced with a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit, the Trail Blazers finally found their offense, adding 32 points to the Pelicans’ 22.

“Maybe we need to be more aggressive getting downhill,” CJ McCollum said. “You’ve got to figure out how the referees are reffing the game and go from there.”

McCollum scored 19 points, while Damian Lillard had 18 points with seven rebounds and seven assists. Jusuf Nurkic was neutralized by Davis: he added just 11 points and 11 boards.

Trends:

New Orleans Pelicans are:

  • 1-5 ATS in their last 6 vs. NBA Northwest.

Portland Trail Blazers are:

  • 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Tuesday games.
  • 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games following an ATS loss.
  • 14-4 ATS in their last 18 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
  • 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games playing on 2 days rest.

The Trail Blazers will know how important game 2 is after losing the series opener. The Pelicans will look to bank on their defense again, but the Trail Blazers will come up with their own plans to counter.
