Our Deep-3 picks are 8-1 this week and we’ve got the latest version right here:
The Wright State Raiders will be looking for their ninth win of the season when the team travels to the BB&T Arena to take on the Northern Kentucky Norse. Wright State enters this game with an 8-9 record after pulling off a nice victory against Oakland in its last game. Meanwhile, Northern Kentucky is currently 13-4 after beating Detroit in its last game. Now, both teams will be looking to improve their conference records in this one.
Wright State Looks To Return To .500
Last season, the Wright State Raiders went 25-10 and even made it to the NCAA tournament before losing to Tennessee in the first round. This season, the Raiders were expected to build upon last year behind some veteran leadership as the team looked to make it back to into the tournament. So far this season, Wright State has looked underwhelming as the team is currently 8-9 including a disappointing loss to Detroit on January 3. However, the team did manage to respond to that loss quite nicely as Wright State dismantled Oakland on the road en route to a 16 point victory. In that game, Wright State’s offense was fantastic as the team scored 89 points on better than 45% shooting from the three-point line. Although Oakland is having a down year, that win could be the turning point of the Raiders’ season. Only time will tell if it will lead the team to an upset victory in this one.
The Wright State Raiders are led by sophomore center Loudon Love who has looked great so far this season. Last season, Love averaged 12.9 points per game along with 9.7 rebounds while shooting 53.3% from the floor. So far this season, Love has played just as well as he leads the team in rebounds per game. He is currently averaging 13.8 points per game along with 8.6 rebounds as he has definitely embraced bigger offensive responsibilities on this team. However, that level of domination will be a lot more difficult to duplicate against a quality foe like Northern Kentucky and we will have to see if he is up to the challenge.
Northern Kentucky Is The Horizon’s Best Team
Last season, the Northern Kentucky Norse went 22-10 and lost in the first round of the NIT tournament to Louisville. This season, the Norse were expected to build upon last year behind some veteran leadership as the team looked to win the conference and to make it into the NCAA tournament. So far this season, Wright State has looked like the best team in the Horizon conference as the team is currently 13-4 which is the best record in the conference by a wide margin. However, the team is currently half a game behind Green Bay for the regular season conference title lead and a win in this game could put the Norse in first place. In the team’s last game, Northern Kentucky destroyed Detroit on the road by 22 points. In that game, Northern Kentucky’s offense was fantastic as the team scored 95 points on better than 57% shooting from the floor. Wright State is definitely better than Detroit but is still having a down year. Northern Kentucky’s offense should play well again in this one.
The Northern Kentucky Norse are led by senior forward Drew McDonald who has looked great so far this season. Last season, McDonald averaged 17.0 points per game along with 9.6 rebounds. So far this season, he has played even better as he leads the team in points and rebounds per game once again. He is currently averaging 18.6 points per game along with 10.0 rebounds. However, that level of domination will be a lot more difficult to duplicate against a quality big man like Loudon Love and we will have to see if he can play this well against steep competition.
- Norse are 7-1-1 ATS in their last 9 games after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game.
- Norse are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Friday games.
- Raiders are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Simply put, Northern Kentucky is the better team and it is not close. This Wright State team is a terrible road team in a terrible spot against a surging Northern Kentucky team that is the class of its conference. Wright State has a lot of players returning from last season’s NCAA tournament team but I do not think the team will be able remain competitive against this Northern Kentucky team that is undefeated at home. I’ll take the home favorite in this one as a result.
Prediction: Northern Kentucky
Full-Game Total Pick
Both teams in this matchup are capable of putting the ball in the basket with ease while coming into this contest with quality offensive outputs. Both teams scored at least 89 points in their last game and I can see Love and McDonald having big games in the low block. The over in the last six matchups between these teams is also 4-1-1 so I will ride with the over trend in this one.
