Cleveland State Vikings at Oakland Golden Grizzlies
When and Where: Friday January 12 at 7 p.m. ET at Athletics Center O’rena in Rochester, MI
Line: Oakland -15.5
The Vikings have lost seven of their last eight games. Cleveland State’s lone win came against Green Bay in Horizon league play. The Vikings, however, have been close in some of their recent losses. Oakland, on the other hand, has lost three of its previous four games. The Golden Grizzlies are 4-3 over their past seven games.
The Vikings haven’t had much success in terms of wins this year, but Cleveland State has played much better lately. The Vikings lost by seven total points in their three-combined Horizon league losses. The offense has been inconsistent this year, only averaging a shade under 70 points per game on the season. Rebounding the ball hasn’t been Cleveland State’s strength as the Vikings rank 346th in the country, grabbing under 30 rebounds per game.
Three Vikings are averaging double figures, led by Kenny Carpenter and his 12.7 points per game. Carpenter might be the leading scorer, but he went scoreless in the Vikings loss to Detroit Mercy. Bobby Wood has been the more consistent Viking lately, scoring 19 points in the narrow loss to Detroit Mercy. Wood’s shooting 40 percent from three on 6.5 attempts per game.
The Golden Grizzlies did win their last game, but overall Oakland has struggled, especially in Horizon league play. Although all three straight losses were close, Oakland needs to be more consistent as league play progresses. The Golden Grizzlies are averaging 81.3 points per game, and they should be able to score easily against the Vikings. Defensively, however, opponents have had success, scoring over 80 points per game.
Kendrick Nunn has been electric for the Golden Grizzlies, scoring 25 points per game on the season. Nunn has scored 30 or more points in three of Oakland’s last five games. He’s connected on 41 percent of his three-point attempts on the season. Outside of Nunn, Jalen Hayes, a senior, has averaged 19.3 points and eight rebounds per game.
- Vikings are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.
- Golden Grizzlies are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS loss.
- Golden Grizzlies are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
- Golden Grizzlies are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games.
Oakland should win this game, but the Vikings should be able to score enough points to keep this close. The Golden Grizzlies have an electric offense that should be on full display, but the defense has been puzzling.
