Boise State Mustangs vs. San Jose State Spartans
NCAAB: Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 3:00 PM EST
Boise State has won two in a row and three of their last four games and they are at 2-0 in MWC play., They won in a blowout in their last two games where they played great defense in both holding their opponents to 55 and 64 points respectively. The Mustangs are led by their defense, which ranks a respectable 73rd in the nation in points allowed and while only ranking 253rd in the nation in ppg they put up 88 points in their last game.
San Jose State is reeling, as they have lost five in a row and they were crushed in their last game losing by 39 points. They are 0-2 in conference play and they have not scored more than 53 points in any of their last three games. The Spartans have been blown out in three straight games and they have struggled, big time, on both sides of the court this season.
Boise State is 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games facing San Jose State, but has failed to cover in four of their last five road games against them.
Jumping out early
In their last game Boise State was at home and they beat San Diego State 88-64 where they jumped out to a 21-point halftime lead. They shot a scorching 56.9% from the floor and shot the three-ball pretty well while they held the Aztecs to only 40.7% shooting and a 3-pt FG% of only 14.3%. Derrick Alston came off the bench to go for a career high of 30 points on 9/14 shooting almost tripling his season average and starter Alex Hobbs was the only other player for the Broncos to go for double figures with 16 points.
Plenty of career highs for Derrick Alston last Saturday!

Roderick Williams leads three Boise State players averaging in double figures at 13.3 ppg and Justinian Jessup ranks 2nd on the team averaging 12.5 ppg and he has scored nine points in two of his last three games including the last one. Boise State cannot look past San Jose State to their next game facing 10th ranked Nevada at home.
2nd half implosion
San Jose State was on the road in their last game losing to a ranked Nevada team 92-53 where they were just down nine points at the half, but was outscored 60-30 in the 2nd half. They only shot 40% from the floor and 29.2% from 3-point land and had 22 turnovers while they allowed Nevada to shoot 52.1% from the field. Brae Ivey was the only player for the Spartans to go for double figures with only 10 points on 4/7 shooting. Michael Steadman (13.4 ppg) leads San Jose State in scoring and he had gone for double digits in 11 straight games before only going for eight points in the loss to Nevada.
Ivey is the only other player averaging in double figures at 11.9 ppg and he has only averaged 8.6 ppg in his last three games. This season San Jose State is 3-4 at home and Boise State is 1-4 on the road.
The San Jose State Spartans are:
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games after allowing more than 90 points in their previous game
- 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up loss
The Boise State Broncos are:
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall
- 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Last season at home Boise State routed San Jose State and they will do the same this season, but on the road. The Spartans just cannot get it together on either side of the floor and they will give up a ton of points and not score many. The Mustangs will easily win and cover in this game sending the reeling Spartans to their 6th straight loss.
Prediction: PICK: Boise State
Full-Game Total Pick
Tough call in the total for this one, as while Boise State will blow out San Jose State how many points will the Spartans put up? the total has gone Under in four of the last five games between these teams at San Jose State and that is the trend I am going with. In this MWC game take the Under, which will be the winning pick.
Prediction: PICK: Under
