North Texas will be looking for its 17th win of the season when it travels to the UTSA Convocation Center to take on the UTSA Roadrunners. North Texas is currently 16-1 and is coming off of a road win against UTEP in its last game. Meanwhile, UTSA enters this game with a 9-7 record after beating Rice in its last game. Now, both teams will be looking to improve upon their respective records this Saturday.
North Texas Continues To Roll
Last season, the North Texas Mean Green went 20-18 and even managed to win the CBI tournament. This season, the team is looking to prove the doubters wrong behind some veteran leadership and have started the season out with victories in 16 of its first 17 games. The Mean Green currently have the 19th best scoring defense in the nation and it has carried them to such a fantastic start. In the team’s last game, North Texas only gave up 51 points to UTEP on less than 37% shooting. With another average offense up next, look for its defense to play well again in this one.
The North Texas Mean Green’s success has been due to its stellar guard play. One of the key additions this season which has helped in that area is freshman guard Umoja Gibson. Last season, Gibson barely played as he suffered a season-ending injury in the team’s second game of the season. However, Gibson was granted an extra year of eligibility via medical redshirt and has looked solid so far this season. So far this season, Gibson is averaging 12.3 points along with 2.8 rebounds per game. Gibson has been shooting the lights out as he has shot an astounding 43.3% from the three-point line. North Texas will need him to play well if the team plans on covering the number this Saturday.
UTSA Looks For Seventh Straight Win
Last season, the UTSA Roadrunners went 20-15 and lost in the second round of the CIT to Sam Houston State. This season, UTSA has looked better as the team has won nine of its first 16 games. However, the team has started to revive its season as the Roadrunner have won six straight games including a 16 point win against Rice in the team’s last game. In that game, the Roadrunners were fantastic on offense as the team scored 95 points while shooting over 49% from the floor. However, with a much better foe up next, its offense will definitely struggle more than it did in its last game.
The UTSA Roadrunners are led by sophomore guard Keaton Wallace who has been a key contributor for the program last season. Last season, Wallace was extremely solid as he averaged 11.4 points per game along with 3.1 rebounds. However, Wallace has been even better this season as he is currently averaging 18.3 points per game along with 4.4 rebounds. As one of the best player on the team, he will have to carry UTSA offensively if the Roadrunners plan on covering this spread.
- Under is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Texas-San Antonio.
- Under is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.
- Under is 7-1-2 in Mean Green Eagles last 10 vs. Conference USA.
- Under is 4-1 in Mean Green Eagles last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Overall, I think that North Texas is the better team but I am not stepping in front of UTSA at home in this one. UTSA has won its last six games and this team is currently clicking on all cylinders. I think that North Texas will probably win the game but I think that UTSA is getting too many points here. Give me the home team plus the points in this one as a result.
Full-Game Total Pick
This game screams under to me due to North Texas’ elite defense. With the 19th-best scoring defense in the country, North Texas has the ability to shut down opponents early and often. As a result, I cannot see UTSA scoring more than 70 points in this contest. North Texas’ offense is also average at best so this game should be relatively low scoring. I will recommend the under in this one as a result.
