Pepperdine will both be looking for its ninth win of the season when the team travels to the Jenny Craig Pavilion to take on the San Diego Toreros. Pepperdine is currently 8-9 after losing to Santa Clara in its last game. Meanwhile, San Diego enters this game with a 12-5 record after beating Pacific in its last game. Now, both teams will be looking for their second conference win of the season in this one.
Pepperdine Loses Heartbreaker To Santa Clara
Last season, the Pepperdine Waves went 6-26 and lost in the quarterfinals of its conference tournament to Saint Mary’s. This season, Pepperdine has looked significantly better as it already has two more wins than it did last season in just 17 games. However, the team’s eight victories are due to some extremely weak opponents. The team did have a chance to beat an underrated Santa Clara in its last game but the game resulted in a three-point loss. In that game, Pepperdine’s offense was the reason for the failed upset attempt as the team only shot 40% from the floor and only scored 64 points. If the team had shot any better, it probably would have walked away with that victory. However, since the team lost, it will now look to get back to its winning ways this Saturday.
The Pepperdine Waves are led by sophomore guard Colbey Ross who has been a huge factor on last year’s team. Last season, Ross was extremely solid as he averaged 14.0 points per game along with 5.6 assists. However, he has played even better this season as he is currently leading the team in scoring with 18.5 points per game along with 7.4 assists. Ross will most likely be the face of this program for the next few seasons and he has the ability to single-handedly lead his team to victory in this one.
San Diego Continues To Impress
Last season, the San Diego Toreros went 20-14 and even made it to the quarterfinals of the CIT before losing to Northern Colorado. This season, the Toreros were expected to build upon last year behind some veteran leadership as the team looks to make it back to into postseason competition. So far this season, San Diego has looked solid as the team is currently 12-5 including a nine-point victory against Pacific in the team’s last game. In that game, San Diego’s defense was the story as the team only gave up 64 points on less than 39% shooting from the floor. With another below average offense up next, look for the team’s defense to play well once again.
The San Diego Toreros are led by senior forward Isaiah Pineiro who has looked great so far this season. Last season, Pineiro averaged 15.7 points per game along with 6.2 rebounds while shooting 49.1% from the floor. So far this season, Pineiro has played even better as he leads the team in points per game and rebounds per game. Pineiro is currently averaging 20.1 points per game along with 8.9 rebounds as he has definitely embraced the leadership role on this team. If San Diego plans on covering this spread, he better be at his best once again.
- Under is 4-0 in Toreros last 4 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- Under is 6-1 in Toreros last 7 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
- Under is 4-1 in Toreros last 5 home games.
- Under is 5-0 in Waves last 5 road games.
- Under is 4-0 in Waves last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
- Under is 4-0 in Waves last 4 Saturday games.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Although Pepperdine looks better this season than it has in seasons past, I simply do not trust this team on the road as the team is winless in its six road games this season. San Diego has also been extremely solid this season and I think there is a major talent disparity in this one. I think that the Toreros will win their tenth home game of the season in this one. I expect San Diego to cover the spread in the end.
Prediction: San Diego
Full-Game Total Pick
Both teams have decent offenses but underrated defenses which should lead to an under in this one. I expect San Diego’s defense to continue to play well after stifling its previous opponent to just 64 points. Meanwhile, Pepperdine’s offense has been terrible in recent weeks and I cannot see this unit playing well against such a formidable defensive team.. This total seems a bit high to me. Give me the under.
