The BYU Cougars and the Santa Clara Broncos will meet at the Marriott Center this Saturday as both teams look for another victory. BYU enters this game with a 10-8 record after beating Portland in its last game. Meanwhile, Santa Clara is 10-7 this season as it beat Pepperdine in its last game. Now, both teams will be looking to improve on their respective records in this one.
Santa Clara Barely Beats Pepperdine
Last season, the Santa Clara Broncos went 11-20 and lost in the first round of its conference tournament to Pepperdine. This season, Santa Clara has looked significantly better as it already has ten wins as the team will attempt to finish the season with a winning record. The team managed to reach that double digit win total in the team’s last game as the team barely defeated Pepperdine by three points. In that game, Santa Clara’s defense was fantastic as the team only gave up 64 points on40% shooting from the floor. If the team plans on winning this game, its defense will need to play at its current level.
The Santa Clara Broncos are led by sophomore guard Tahj Eaddy who has looked significantly better than he did last season. Last season, Eaddy only averaged 7.5 points per game along with 2.3 assists. However, he has become the leader of the this year’s team as he is currently leading the team in scoring with 17.0 points per game along with 3.7 assists. Eaddy is a solid player and he will need to play well in this one for the team to pull off this upset.
BYU Looks To Continue Dominance At Home
Last season, the BYU Cougars went 24-11 and lost in the first round of the NIT to Stanford. BYU entered this season with hopes of reaching the NCAA tournament for the time since 2015. So far this season, the team has underachieved as it has only won ten of its first 18 games. However, the team is currently 9-1 at home and has won two of its last three games including a blowout home victory over Portland in its last game. In that game, BYU’s defense was great as it only allowed 56 points on less than 38% shooting from the floor. If BYU looks to win this game, its defense better continue playing this well.
The BYU Cougars are led by junior forward Yoeli Childs who has been fantastic for the last two seasons. Last season, he averaged over 17 points per game along with 8.6 rebounds. This season, he has managed to improve as he is currently leading the team in scoring with 22.0 points per game along with 10.3 rebounds. Childs is a force in the paint and he will need to dominate the post once again if the Cougars want to win this game.
- Cougars are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
- Cougars are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- Cougars are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.
- Underdog is 2-5 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Although Santa Clara won its last game, I simply do not trust this team on the road in this game. BYU is currently 9-1 at home and is coming off of a blowout win in which the team’s defense played its best game of the season. I think that the Cougars will win their tenth home game of the season in this one. I expect this game to be close for a while but I think that BYU will cover the spread in the end.
Full-Game Total Pick
Both teams played well defensively in their last game and gave up less than 65 points each. I expect both teams to continue playing quality defense in this one which should result in less points. I think that BYU’s defense is good enough to limit the Tigers to less than 70 points as Santa Clara will do a good job guarding the three-point line in this one. I lean to the under as a result.
