Wyoming will both be looking for its third win of the season when the team hosts Utah State at the Arena-Auditorium. Wyoming is currently 4-12 after losing to San Diego State in its last game. Meanwhile, Utah State is 11-5 but lost to Fresno State in its last game. Now, both teams will be in search of a bounce-back victory in this one as both teams currently possess a losing record in conference play.
Utah State Loses Heartbreaker At Home
Last season, the Utah State Aggies went 17-17 and made it to the semifinals of its conference tournament before losing to New Mexico. This season, the team looked to improve drastically behind some veteran leadership and to maybe even win the conference entirely. So far this season, the team has been extremely solid as it is currently 11-5 and looks like a serious threat in the Mountain West conference. However, the team lost its last game to Fresno State by one point as the team blew a two-point lead with five seconds left. In that game, Utah State’s defense was awful as it only allowed 78 points on over 45% shooting from the floor. However, with a much worse team up next, look for Utah State’s defense to find its groove again.
The Utah State Aggies are led by junior guard Sam Merrill who has been great this season. Last season, he averaged 16.3 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per game. However, he has been even better this season as he is currently leading the team in scoring with 19.1 points per game and 3.6 rebounds. If Utah State plans on covering this spread, he will have to play well again in this one.
Wyoming Continues To Struggle On Defense
After finishing with 20 wins last season, Wyoming was looking to win even more games this season as the team brought back some key contributors from last season. However, the team has been awful this season as the team has only won four of its first 16 games. Specifically, the team has been awful on the defensive end as the team has given up 77.4 points per game which ranks 274th in all of college basketball. The team’s defense managed to play even worse in its last game against San Diego State as it allowed 84 points on over 50% shooting from the floor. If Wyoming plans on winning this game and even turning its season around, its defense will have to play a lot better.
The Wyoming Cowboys are led by senior guard Justin James. Last season, James was fantastic as he led the team in points and assists per game. James averaged 18.9 points along with 3.1 assists per game. This season, James has been even better as he leads the team with 20.7 points per game along with 9.3 rebounds. James is the best player on the team and might even have a future in the NBA. Look for James to have a big impact if Wyoming is able to cover this spread.
- Cowboys are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
- Cowboys are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- Aggies are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
- Aggies are 38-14 ATS in their last 52 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Although Wyoming is at home for this contest, I cannot back the Cowboys in this one. Wyoming’s defense is awful and the Aggies have a ton of scorers on its roster. That combo does not bode well for the Cowboys and I think that Utah State will score at will. Utah State is also a very solid defensive team that should limit Adams in this one. As a result, give me the road team.
Prediction: Utah State
Full-Game Total Pick
Both teams have the ability to score a lot of points and I think that Wyoming’s defense is abysmal. Wyoming likes to get out in transition and Utah State will gladly partake in that type of game. I think that both teams will try to create some easy scoring chances early in the shot clock as this game will land over the posted total. Give me the over in this one as a result.
