Washington State Cougars vs. Utah Utes
Where and when: Jon M. Huntsman Center, Salt Lake City, Utah, Saturday, 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time
The Washington State Cougars will travel to Jon M Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, for a Saturday night showdown versus the Utah Utes at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in Pac-12 college basketball action. The Utes have lost three of their last four games, overall, as they fell to the Washington Huskies at home in their last outing as the Huskies held the Utes to only 33% shooting on the night while connecting on just 6 of 33 attempts. And while the Huskies did not shoot well from the field either, they received a huge lift off the bench by Nahziah Carter as he chipped in 18 points while also going 3-4 from three-point range in the victory for the Huskies.
On the other hand, the Washington State Cougars have struggled as well as they are losers of five straight games, overall, as they were blown out on the road versus the Colorado Buffaloes in their last time out as this game was not close by any stretch as Washington State was essentially whipped in every phase of the game by Colorado in this contest. In all, the 92 point output was the third outing in their last five games that Washington State has allowed 75 points of more to an opponent. Unfortunately for the Cougars, they are only 1-7 against the spread in the last eight meetings at the Huntsman Center. On the other hand, the home team is 12 – 3 against the spread in the last 15 meetings among these two teams.
Utes offensive struggles result in loss to Huskies
The Utah Utes, who entered their matchup with the Washington Huskies scoring 80 or more points in three of their prior four outings, crashed and burned in their matchup with the Huskies as they shot just 33% from the floor while connecting on just 20% of their 3-point attempts on the night. And while they were able to outrebound Washington by a 43-36 margin for the game, 15 turnovers on the night certainly did not bode well for them picking up a win in this contest.
Thanks for the support tonight @TheMUSS. ❤️

Jace Johnson along with Johnny Tillman paced the offensive attack for Utah as they ended with 12 and 10 points, respectively, as they were the only two double-digit scorers on the night for the Utes. On the other hand, Nahziah Carter along with David Crisp led the scoring attack for the Huskies in this contest as they ended with 19 and 18 points as they combined to go 8-11 from long range on the night for a Huskies team that shot just 42% from the floor yet were able to connect on nine of 22 3-point attempts in the contest.
In all, Washington certainly did not have many problems at all in disposing of the Utah Utes as their offense continues to disappoint on a nightly basis. Their defense, on the other hand, is allowing opponents to shoot over 46% from the floor on a nightly basis as well while they have allowed 80 points more in three of their last four outings, total. They will certainly like to curb the trends in this matchup versus a Washington State Cougars offense that is averaging a tad under 80 points per game on 47% shooting; However, recently, have only put up an average of 62 points during a five-game losing streak.
Cougars blown out by Buffs in dismal shooting night
Washington State has had to rely on its offense throughout much of the season as their defense has not been able to remain consistent at all in allowing opponents to shoot over 46% from the floor for game. And while the defense has certainly been horrible in 2018, they were extra horrible in their outing versus the Colorado Buffaloes as the Buffs shot well over 50% from the floor while also shooting over 40% from three-point range in their victory over the Cougars.
Tyler Bate led the team with 26 points on the night while Shane Gatling along with Shawn Swartz also chipped in 17 and 16 points as well for a Colorado Buffalo squad that was on fire on the night. On the other hand, the cold shooting Washington State Cougars only shot 36% from the night while making good on just two of 18 three pointers as Marvin Cannon went o – 2 for the night while leading the team with 14 points.
UP NEXT: These road warriors have one more game before returning to Pullman. Catch us at Utah, Saturday, Jan. 12 at 5 p.m. PT/6 p.m. MT.

As stated, Washington certainly needs to shore up vulbnerabilities on both ends of the floor in which to pick up the victory in this contest versus a Utah Utes team that has struggled as well, particularly on the defensive end of the floor. With that being the case, Washington State may indeed have some success in this contest; However, they must also be willing to push the pace of the game in which two gain easy buckets in transition while also getting to the free-throw line much more.
- Utes are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
- Over is 6-2 in Cougars last 8 Sat. games
- Over is 6-2 in cougars last 8 vs. Pacific-12
- Over is 19-7 in cougars last 26 overall
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
I will back the Utes in this contest as I have little to no belief that the Washington Cougars will be able to keep up, offensively, in this contest. And while the Utes have not been overly spectacular on the offensive end lately as well as throughout the season, they have indeed put up 80 or more points in their last two outings before their meeting with the Washington Huskies. With that being said, expect for the home team to hit some critical buckets down the stretch while holding a dismal offensive unit for the Cougars to the bare minimum as it relates to shooting percentage and points.
Prediction: Pick: Utah Utes -800
Full-Game Total Pick
I will back the under in this contest due to the overall status of both the offenses that will be taking the floor for these teams on Saturday. On one hand, one offense continues to struggle mightily while the other offense continues to put points on the board, however, their defense cannot stop anyone from scoring, either. With that being said, look for both teams to put in a much more effective performance in this matchup vs two dismal offenses, overall.
Prediction: Pick: Under 153,5
Full-Game Prop Bet
What I certainly happen to believe that the Utah Utes will perform well throughout this contest, I simply do not feel good about backing them with so many points. It is for this reason that I will back the Cougars and the 11 points for this matchup as both offenses have struggled throughout the season, thus making this an affair to where either team will have an opportunity to pull out a victory. With that being the case, look for the Cougars to keep this game close throughout due to Utah’s inability to gain any type of consistency on the offensive end.
Prediction: Pick: Washington State Cougars +11.5
Half-Time Side Pick
Again, expect Washington State to perform well enough early on in which to certainly cover the six and a half points at the half for this contest. As stated, Utah has struggled just as much, if not more, than the Washington State Cougars have lately. With that being the case, look for this to be a low-scoring, yet competitive matchup amongst two teams that will certainly be looking to get back in the win column on Saturday. Nonetheless, Washington state will make the case in which to come out the victor in this matchup early as they will go into the half playing very well en route to cashing in on the spread at the break.
Prediction: Pick: Washington State Cougars +6.5
Half-Time Total Bet
With the way in which both offenses have struggled lately, the under will indeed be the strong play at the half for this contest amongst Washington State and Utah on Saturday. In all, one should certainly expect a defensive-minded matchup early on as both offenses will struggle; However, will find a bit of rhythm as half-time approaches in what will be a low-scoring affair where the total will not surpass its set limit at the halfway point.
Prediction: Pick: Under 73
Half-Time Prop Prediction
Look for Utah to claim a lead at the half as they will seal a dismal shooting first half by hitting some critical baskets down the stretch in which to cash in on the money line. As stated, this will be a defensive-minded matchup, so, Washington State will certainly be knocking on the door at the halfway point. Nonetheless, the Utes will benefit from much more efficient trips on the offensive end as the half approaches as the home team will go into the break with a slim lead advantage.
Prediction: Pick: Utah Utes -400
