Pittsburgh Panthers (8-9) vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9-7)

When and Where: Saturday, January 13, Pittsburgh, PA, 2:00 P.M. EST

Line: Georgia Tech -5.5

Total: 127

This will be the duel between two teams who are currently heading in the opposite directions. I say currently because their straight up record is not much different but their current form is. Since the start of the ACC play the Panthers have recorded all four losses while the Yellow Jackets managed to snatch three wins in four games. The Georgia Tech is coming off from a home win over Notre Dame, 60-53, while the Panthers got torpedoed at home by the Duke, 52-87.

The Yellow Jackets want to extend their winning streak to four

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets had some issues during the non-conference slate especially on offense, and even though those problems persisted, the team managed to strengthen even further defensively by allowing only 58.3 points per game (3rd in the ACC) to their rivals in first four conference games that resulted with three wins.  The squad averages only 66.4 points per game on offense (321st nationally) but their forte is the defensive side of the court as they limit their opponents to 63.3 points per contest (20th in the NCAA).

The Yellow Jackets’ main power individually is consisted in four games with guard Josh Okogie leading the way by averaging 19.6 points, 5.5 boards and 1.5 assists per game. Seniors Tadric Jackson and Ben Lammers keep the pace with 13.7 and 12.2 points per duel while Lammers also top the team in rebounds with 8.8 in average. Freshman guard Jose Alvarado records 13.1 points and team-high 3.1 assists per matchup. Against Fighting Irish, Okogie led the team with 17 points while Jackson added 11.

The Panthers lose four in a row

Coach Kevin Stallings’ second season at the helm of the Panthers is starting to look awfully similar to the first one and that’s not what the fans were hoping for. The team entered the conference play by worsening every single stat number that resulted in four losses. The team is scoring almost 11 points less and allowing eight points more than during the non-conference play and they are currently at the bottom of almost every statistical segment in the ACC. The squad limits their opponents to 70.9 points per game (146th nationally), while averaging 66.6 points per contest on offense (320th in the NCAA).

Individually, junior guard Jared Wilson-Frame tops the team in scoring with 13.1 points on average while adding 3.6 boards and 1.1 assists. Two freshman guards Marcus Carr and Shamiel Stevenson are recording 10.6 and 9.9 points while Carr also adds team-high 3.9 assists per matchup. Most impact on defense comes from forward Ryan Luther who is posting double-double numbers on the stat sheet with 12.7 points and 10.1 boards per showdown. Against the Blue Devils, Wilson-Frame led the team with 17 points while Stevenson added eight points.

Trends:

Georgia Tech:

  • 4-0 ATS in their last four games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
  • 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall.
  • 2-8 O/U in their last 10 Saturday games.

Pittsburgh:

  • 1-7-1 ATS in their last nine home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
  • 1-8 ATS in their last nine games vs. Atlantic Coast.
  • 2-10 O/U in their last 12 games vs. Atlantic Coast.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are the clear favorite on Saturday as the Panthers struggle to keep composure and make some kind of a positive impression. The ATS line favors the guest at 5.5 and that’s exactly where we want it to be. If you need to pick Totals, pick Under.

The Pick: Georgia Tech / Under
