For our Top Plays of the Day, check out the Fab Five:
The Drake Bulldogs will both be looking for their 13th win of the season when the team travels to the McLeod Center to take on the Northern Iowa Panthers. Drake is currently 12-4 after beating Southern Illinois in its last game. Meanwhile, Northern Iowa enters this game with a 6-10 record after losing to Illinois State in its last game. Both teams will be looking to improve upon their respective records in this one.
Drake Looks For Another Win
Last season, the Drake Bulldogs went 17-17 and lost in the second round of the CIT to Northern Colorado. This season, Drake has looked significantly better as the team is currently 12-4. Drake came into this season with the expectations of competing in the Missouri Valley Conference and the team looks like one of the favorites to win the conference at this point in time. However, the team was in the midst of a two-game losing streak before winning its last game against Southern Illinois. In that game, Drake’s offense was solid as the team scored 82 points on better than 54% shooting from the floor.
The Drake Bulldogs are led by senior forward Nick McGlynn who was a solid player on last year’s team. Last season, McGlynn averaged 11.8 points per game along with 5.7 rebounds. However, he has managed to play even better this season as he is currently leading the team in scoring with 16.4 points per game along with 7.8 rebounds. If Drake has any chance of covering this spread, he will need to play really well.
Northern Iowa Continues To Struggle
Last season, the Northern Iowa Panthers went 16-16 and lost in the quarterfinals of its conference tournament to Loyola-Chicago. This season, Northern Iowa has looked even worse as the team is currently 6-10. Northern Iowa has particularly struggled on the offensive end as the team is scoring less than 66 points per game. However, in the team’s last game, it was Northern Iowa’s defense that played poorly as the team allowed Illinois State to score 70 points on over 51% shooting from the floor in a one point loss. If Northern Iowa plans on turning around its season, the team’s offense and defense will need to play well for a full 40 minutes.
The Northern Iowa Panthers are led by freshman guard AJ Green who has been amazing this season. This season, he has burst onto the college basketball scene as he is currently leading the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game along with 3.4 rebounds. He is also the only player on the team averaging more than ten points per game so he will need to play really well if the team plans on covering this spread.
- Panthers are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games.
- Panthers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 Sunday games.
- Bulldogs are 9-0 ATS in their last 9 games following a ATS win.
- Bulldogs are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up win.
- Bulldogs are 11-2 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Overall, I think that this Drake team is miles ahead of this Northern Iowa team and I do not think that this spread is high enough. Drake has a lot of experienced players and I think that the leaders will step up in this one. Northern Iowa is good at home but this program is in the midst of a down season. I think that Drake should be able to sneak away with a road win here. I’ll take the road underdog as a result.
Prediction: Drake +2
Full-Game Total Pick
Northern Iowa has struggled mightily this season when it comes to putting the ball in the basket and plays really good defense at home. Drake will try to speed the game up but I think that Northern Iowa will be effective at slowing down the pace which should result in less points. This total seems a bit low but I believe it is low for a reason. Give me the under in this one as a result.
Prediction: Under 138.5
