The Western Michigan Broncos will host the Bowling Green State University Falcons, Tuesday night in a Mid-American Conference match-up. After losing the conference opener at home to Kent State, Bowling Green has put together wins over Miami and Ohio to move to 2-1 in the conference. Western Michigan won their conference opener against Ohio but has dropped the last two games at Akron and at Toledo to dip to 1-2.

Last season these teams met twice, with Bowling Green winning both match-ups, 79-48 at Western Michigan and 85-72 in Bowling Green.

Falcons dominate second half in comeback over Ohio

BGSU ended last season with a loss to the Buffalo Bulls in the MAC Championship game, extending one of the most prolonged NCAA Tournament droughts in the country. With the Falcons being picked to win the MAC-East in the preseason coaches’ poll, there are expectations around the program that this could be the year the Falcons return to the tournament for the first time since 1968.

BGSU got off to an 8-2 start this season, including a win over Cincinnati but hit a snag and dropped three of four games to Norfolk State, Quinnipiac, and Kent State. The Falcons were favored to win in each of those losses, but Justin Turner, who averages 18.5 points per game and shots 92% from the free-throw line, missed the Norfolk and Quinnipiac games due to a hamstring injury. With a healthy Turner, the Falcons hope to be heading in the right direction after back-to-back conference wins.

Saturday against Ohio, the Falcons fell behind 28-14 with 9:36 left in the first half. The Falcons were able to use a 21-7 second-half run to gain control of the game on the way to an 83-74 comeback win. Justin Turner led the Falcons with 29 points.

Dylan Frye is the Falcons second-leading scorer with 14.1 points per game, followed by Daeqwon Plowden, who averages 13.1 points and eight rebounds a game while shooting 94% from the free-throw line.

As a team, BGSU averages 76 points per game, ranking sixth in the MAC, and are allowing 72 points per game, ranking eighth.

Broncos fall to Toledo down the stretch

The Western Michigan Broncos finished the 2018-19 season with an 8-24 record overall and 2-16 in conference play. The Broncos were predicted to end the season in fifth place among the six-team MAC West Division, according to the preseason coaches poll.

The Broncos lost on the road against MAC West preseason favorite Toledo, 67-58, on Saturday night. The Broncos trailed 40-38 with 14:43 left in the game before the Rockets went on a 17-6 run over the next ten minutes to pull away. Brandon Johnson, lead the Broncos with 23 points and six rebounds, and Michael Flowers added 13 points in a losing effort.

On the season Flowers leads the team in scoring averaging 17.5 points per game, followed by Johnson who is getting 15.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest.

Western Michigan enters this game ranked 8th in the MAC for scoring offense, averaging 71.8 points per game. On defense, the Broncos are allowing 72.8 points per game, which is 10th in the MAC.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

Bowling Green will have a significant advantage on the glass in this game. The Falcons are +2.1 in rebounding margin on the season. Western Michigan as a team is -4 in that department, by far the worst in the MAC and 312th in the nation.  The Broncos have been outrebounded in their last six games against Division I opponents. The Falcon's trailed at halftime by nine against Miami and by 10 against Ohio before rallying to win in the second half.  Although the Falcons would like to play better early, they have shown resilience to come back and pull out games down the stretch.

Prediction: BGSU -2.5

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Seven of the last nine games played in this series have gone over the total. Western Michigan has played to the over in four of their previous five games. BGSU has played above the total in four of their last six games. There have been an average of 150 points scored in BGSU's three MAC games this season and an average of 140 points scored in Western Michigan games. The total of 143 points is a little on the low side for what I expect.

Prediction: Over 143.5
